📢 Important Update for Families with Children on the Autism Spectrum

The government has announced a $2 billion “Thriving Kids” program which will change how children with mild to moderate autism receive support.

👉 What’s changing?
• Kids with mild/moderate autism will no longer automatically access the NDIS.
• Instead, they’ll be referred to “Thriving Kids” for early intervention therapies and supports.
• The NDIS will remain focused on children with severe and permanent disabilities.

🌱 What this could mean:
• Earlier access to therapies without the long NDIS process.
• More community-based services like speech, OT, and school supports.
• A sustainable NDIS for those with the highest needs.

⚠️ Concerns:
• Lack of clarity on what “Thriving Kids” will actually cover.
• Risk of service gaps if the new system isn’t ready when NDIS eligibility changes.
• Quality of support may depend on where you live.
• Many parents feel blindsided and worried about losing vital therapy for their kids.

🧾 Timeline:
• Rollout begins mid-2026, with full implementation by mid-2027.
• Current NDIS participants with autism will remain supported.

✅ Bottom line: Children with ASD will still get support, but the pathway will change. Families need clear, consistent information and strong funding to ensure no child is left behind.

📢 Major Update: “Thriving Kids” Initiative Set to Replace NDIS Support for Some Children

The Australian government has announced a $2 billion “Thriving Kids” program aimed at providing early foundational support for children with mild to moderate autism or developmental delays, moving them off the NDIS. The reform is intended to make the NDIS more sustainable by focusing it on individuals with significant and permanent disabilities.

Key details include:
• Launch Timeline: Program rollout begins mid‑2026, with full implementation by mid‑2027. Changes to NDIS eligibility start once “Thriving Kids” is operational.

• Funding Expectations: The federal government will contribute $2 billion, matched by state and territory governments.

• Why the Change: NDIS growth has been unsustainable—particularly among children (~43% of participants under 15), who account for disproportionately low funding relative to usage. This shift aims to restore the scheme’s focus.

• Concerns Raised:
• Disability advocates and state leaders criticized the lack of consultation, and worry about transitional gaps and clarity on support delivery.

• Parents have expressed anxiety and confusion—some discovered the decision via social media—with fears that long-term progress could be jeopardised without clear, accessible alternatives.

• States like NSW and Victoria have voiced concerns about budget implications, the rushed timeline, and lack of detail.

The government is aiming to restructure support pathways for children with developmental needs. While it promises early intervention via a new model, many worry the transition lacks sufficient planning or broader input—raising serious concerns about the well-being of affected families.
