We stand with RANZCOG in rejecting these claims

The Trump administration has made highly controversial claims about the causes of autism and ADHD, asserting that paracetamol (also known as acetaminophen) use during pregnancy increases the risk of children being diagnosed as neurodivergent.

RANZCOG joins leading clinicians and scientists worldwide in rejecting these claims. Scientific evidence shows no link between paracetamol use in pregnancy and autism or ADHD during childhood, with several large and reliable studies directly contradicting the administration’s statement.

The causes of neurodivergence are incompletely understood and remain complex, involving both genetic and environmental factors. Earlier studies raising concerns about paracetamol could not determine whether the medicine itself was responsible, or whether other factors explained the association.

A much larger and stronger study, published in 2024 by Ahlqvist and colleagues, looked at 2.5 million children in Sweden. When they accounted for important factors like family history of autism/ADHD and sibling comparisons, they found no link between paracetamol use during pregnancy and children developing autism or ADHD.

The use of medications during pregnancy should always balance the potential benefits against any potential harms - both of the medication and of the condition being treated - to the mother and the fetus. The Ahlqvist study provides conclusive evidence that paracetamol use during pregnancy does not increase the chance of neurodivergence in the offspring and therefore should be considered safe to use in pregnancy where there is a clear reason to do so.

People who are uncertain about medication use in pregnancy should discuss this with their doctor or midwife.

Sending our warmest congratulations to Lutfiye Kavci and Vicki Scott, both of the Greater Shepparton region, who have been inducted onto the 2025 Victorian Honour Roll of Women! The Honour Roll recognises outstanding Victorian women whose leadership and achievements make a lasting difference to the community. The late Hon Joan Kirner AC, Victoria’s first female Premier, created the Honour Roll to formally acknowledge women for their achievements and to encourage others to follow in their footsteps.

Lutfiye Kavci is a family violence survivor who turned her horrific experience into creating positive change for others. She became a guest speaker, organised rallies, and worked with the Victims of Crime Commissioner Lived Experience Advisory Group, in addition to running a small business and studying Community Services. Lutfiye's advocacy has inspired many people and is a true example of claiming life back.

Vicki Scott is a respected and trusted community leader who serves with pride, passion, resilience, and care. She refused to sit idly by while having successful treatment for stage IV bowel cancer in 2022, and turned her attention to helping others. She became the inaugural Goulburn Valley Health Foundation Ambassador in 2023. She plays a key role in promoting the Foundation's work and fundraising effort. She also became a GenesisCare Consumer Advocate for people with cancer. Vicki is dedicated to working with diverse communities and promoting equity and inclusion.

Thank you Lutfiye and Vicki for the incredible work you are doing to strengthen our communities and create lasting positive change!

Thursday 11 September is R U OK?Day but we know that whether it’s a friend, family member, partner, or colleague , the people around us go through lifes ups and downs every day. That’s why it's important that everyone to feel confident to check in with the people they care about and Ask R U OK? Any Day.

Research by R U OK? found that those who are regularly asked, 'are you OK?' report increased feelings of wellbeing, and we've learned that a third of Australians say they've been asking others more often over the past year . That means many of us are already showing up for others in meaningful ways, but when it comes to conversations about how we’re really going, some people are less confident than others.

It’s natural to feel a little hesitant, but the good news is nine in ten Australians report feeling grateful, supported and cared for when someone genuinely asks them if they're OK - and that’s a good reason to give it a go. You might even be having these conversations already without realising.

It’s not always easy to keep the conversation going when someone says they’re not OK, but it could change a life. Thank you to R U OK? for providing an easy to follow Conversation Flowchart - having a template for these conversations can give people the confidence to initiate them.
