I’ll be the first to admit I didn’t go deep enough with this. Only finding out when my blood pressure started to rise at the end of pregnancy did I find out that 3 members of my family had preeclampsia and many with high blood pressure.

Preconception is such a vital time to fill nutritional stores which means knowing your genetics.

Pregnancy is the ultimate pressure cooker when it comes to your health so anything that’s there genetically will likely rear its head. Due to the immense pressure and high requirements.

It can be tricky to find but worthwhile saving you later on.

I’m sure most people could tell you what we are meant to avoid through pregnancy, but most couldn’t name the requirements.

We get told to avoid soft cooked eggs many just avoiding them all together because of this. Our need for choline (eggs being a potent source) supports the placenta’s development, baby’s brain, prevents certain mental health disorders and asthma, reduces inflammation and influences muscle movement.

I’ll be speaking about this and more at the discussing motherhood event on the 26th October.

So excited to speak at this event. I never thought it would be such a deep interest of mine. Going through the whole process brings a whole new perspective and light to how lacking we are in support for the mother. Not only in community but nutritionally.

So much fear is driven into what to do and what not to do. So much pressure and critique. Taking us away from our deep intuitive nature and the deeply personal journey that the pregnancy and motherhood is.

When imagining my next pregnancy it’s not the birth I’m nervous about it’s the enormity of pregnancy and postpartum. We put such a focus on the birth and getting ready for the baby that we miss the whole point. The source of life and fuel is the mother. That should be our first and foremost priority.

I feel lucky to have a very supported and healthy pregnancy and postpartum but it still will be one of the biggest challenges and metamorphosis yet.

My goal for this event is to equip you with real nutrition goals, what you should really take omit, herbal support and self care for pre conception, pregnancy and postpartum. Having gone through it all myself I’ve got some good little tips on what’s really achievable.

So much to say! You’ll have to come.

The media loves to throw broad statements out that supplements and herbs don’t work.

I actually had an appointment with a doctor some time ago and he prescribed medication. I said “oh I should mention I’m taking a few different supplements”. His response was “oh take them if you like they don’t do anything anyway”.

This is such a dangerous mindset to have as some supplements can either render the medication useless or worse interact. This can cause some pretty serious symptoms including serotonin syndrome which can be life threatening beginning with agitation, restlessness, tremor and many others pretty serious symptoms.

A fair chunk of my patients are on
medications and it’s absolutely not my place to tell them to come off that medication. So we work with it, checking for interactions at every stage of treatment.

My ethos is and always will be collaboration over competition. The more people on the support team of your the better.

P.S It amazes me that they think herbs don’t work as many medications are derived from herbs. Like metformin which has come from goats rue a herb I use in the clinic all the time for blood sugar issues. The cool part about using the whole herb is you get the full spectrum of the herbs actions rather than just one.

P.S did you know lots of medications have begun as herbs like metformin which started out as goats rue a herb I use a lot in clinic for blood sugar issues. The cool thing about using a herb as a whole is you get it in its full form meaning you get all the other actions too!

I feel boring in clinic sometimes repeating the same advice but eating enough omegas is a big one. Understandably so as with the cost of living fish and seafood can feel like an unnecessary expense when there’s other more cost effective sources of protein.

It’s also one of those foods you either love it or you just don’t.

So what’s the cost of just burying our heads under the sand. If you’re ready to change things but really can’t afford it or just plain don’t like it what can you do?

Especially when we begin to rest it feels impossible to switch off. We need time to unwind, to move into rest and digest. Everything always feels like you’re not good at it at first. Give yourself, your body, your mind sometime to learn how to be at rest again.
