DID YOU KNOW - Childrenโs feet spend up to 40 hours per week in school shoes! Keeping an eye out for early signs of trouble can make a big difference in future development.
Below is a quick guide to the top 10 key areas to look out for:
1. Flat Feet
It can be difficult to determine whether your childโs feet are flat or โnormalโ and whether they require intervention or not. Potential problems caused by flat feet include foot, ankle, shin, knee and back pain. So, if youโre unsure, have your child assessed by a Podiatrist.
2. Alignment problems
Knocked knees, bow legs and pigeon toes are all considered alignment problems and may require intervention. Healthy lower limb alignment is important for the feet, ankles, knees and back in both the long and short term. If you have any concerns, please come in for an assessment.
3. Walking or running problems
Children love to run and play, but if you notice your child tripping, falling or struggling to keep up this may indicate that something is not right. An awkward gait, limping or poor running/walking style are also signs that require assessing.
4. Growing pains
If your child complains about ongoing pain in the feet, knees and legs it may be growing pains or other childhood related musculoskeletal issues. These can generally be easily treated with simple exercises, footwear advice and/or modifications etc. once properly assessed and diagnosed.
5. Sports injuries
There are special conditions affecting children which may result in your child having pain or performing poorly during or after sport. Podiatrists have skills in assessing and treating these conditions so that your child can stay on the field. If you notice any issues whilst theyโre out playing sport, or if your child has recently had an injury we can help.
6. Uneven shoe wear
This can be a sign of a postural or walking/running problems. Have your childโs shoes assessed for advice when you come in for your screening appointment.
7. Plantar warts
Check the bottom of your childโs feet for irregular lumps, which may or may not be painful. Warts arenโt always easy to diagnose, and to treat them effectively a correct diagnosis is essential. Have suspicious lesions professionally looked at.
8. Ingrown toenails
These can be very painful but easily managed with the right care and advice. Pain, redness, discharge or additional bulky tissue around the edge of the nail is common and we treat these on a regular basis.
9. Peeling or blistered skin
There are many conditions that we treat in children; from tinea to bacterial infections. They all have their diagnosis and appropriate treatment solutions.
10. Family history
Unfortunately, foot problems run in families, including flat feet, bunions and even postural or alignment problems. Having a family history of a particular foot condition is sometimes advantageous because we can predict a likely outcome and prevent the problems which parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles have suffered.
