🦷 Cracked teeth in dogs & cats are more common than you think!
We often see pets come in for a dental and discover a fractured tooth that no one knew about. The tricky part? Many pets don’t show obvious signs of pain, but cracked teeth can be very uncomfortable and often lead to infection, abscesses, and the need for extraction under anaesthetic.
Common causes of cracked teeth:
• Chewing bones (especially cooked or weight-bearing bones)
• Hard nylon/plastic chew toys
• Antlers, hooves, horns
• Rocks (yes… really 😅)
• Fetching hard balls repeatedly
How to help prevent dental fractures:
✔ Choose softer rubber toys or dental chews
✔ Avoid bones and very hard chews
✔ Supervise enthusiastic chewers
✔ Regular dental checks at the vet — cracks are often hidden at the back of the mouth
Preventing a cracked tooth can mean avoiding a painful infection and an unexpected dental procedure later on.
