Blissful Herbs - nurturing body & soul Hello! I'm Julie Bell, mother, doula, herbalist and activist - the heart behind Blissful Herbs, whic I'm so glad you're here!
(238)

I'm Julie Bell, mother, doula, herbalist and activist. I have been working with herbs since childhood and my days as a Registered Nurse in New Zealand. I spent 17 years as a humanitarian volunteer worker in Asia, where I was introduced to the amazing materia medica of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the Ayurveda tradition of India. My family then emigrated to Australia in 2004, where, after having three homebirths myself, I followed my passion for birthwork and trained as a doula. I have been serving birthing families in Australia since 2006. After the birth of my 4th baby (yes, also at home - and when I was 43!), I had the opportunity to commence formal studies in Western Herbal Medicine and obtained an Advanced Diploma in WHM. My goal is to upgrade that to the Bachelor degree ( - but first, I need to help another child through her VCE!)

Suffice to say, I LOVE herbs and the way this most humble part of creation holds such gifts to ease the path of human life. Herbs have been called "God's pharmacy" and it's amazing how nature provides gentle, wholesome remedies for just about every challenge or condition life presents. Blissful Herbs offers delicious teas, fragrant bath sachets, healing salves and herbal tinctures to support and nurture you through the seasons of life - from Maiden, to Mother, to Maga, to Crone: throughout menarche, pregnancy, birth, breastfeeding, menopause and beyond. It's my heart to walk gently on this beautiful planet, so here at Blissful Herbs, we try our best to to be an authentically eco-friendly enterprise, using post-consumer, recycled packaging, sourcing organic herbs and other ingredients as locally as possible and using solar power as possible. See 'Notes' for a complete list of products and prices, as well as single herbs available. I can custom make up any special blends at your request. To order, please email me, Julie Bell, at blissfulherbs@bigpond.com

Please contact me if you would like a personal herbalist consultation, in which together we will assess your health needs and explore how best to optimize your health and well-being. Of course, face to face is best, but I also offer phone and Skype consultations when distance is a factor.

And, while on the subject of nice soft wash cloths for little ones, we're now back in stock with the very popular packs of washable organic bamboo baby wipes.

These are smaller in size than the muslin cloths in the post below, similar to the usual "baby cloth" size, and come in sets of four in a handy mesh bag (to protect them and keep them together in the your drawer, nappy bag or washing machine).

These sold so well we completely sold out and I'm thrilled the new shipment just arrived today. They are super soft of the velvety skin of young ones.

If you're wishing to reduce reliance on disposable wipes, I think these will find favour with you.

Now up on the website - organic cotton muslin wash cloths! I LOVE these! They're WONDERFUL to use on the soft skin of little ones' faces, hands, bottoms and bodies.

They're made from soft organic muslin, and being 3-ply and nicely hemmed, they are sturdy and wash well, so you can use them over and over and they'll stay in good condition and not get tatty or frayed.

("Tatty and frayed" is actually not a bad description of how I, the MOTHER, often felt at the time ...)

They have a handy loop so you can hang them on a hook to dry between uses.

They're a generous size, 28 x 28 cm, and are ideal as spit up cloths, for nappy changes, to wash hands & faces at the high chair and pretty much everything (you know how much wiping and washing goes on in the daily care of the under-fives!)

There's five cute designs:

- pandas

- elephants

- bunnies

- strawberries

- cherries

When I lived in Asia for a couple of decades, these handy soft cloths were ubiquitous. I'm glad to now be able to offer them here, because I feel sure they'll become a staple & useful item in your home, too.

Beautiful Amy of chats about what's in her hospital bag.

"I'm pushing out a child, I can take in a whole circus if I want to!"

I LOVE her!

😂😍

Thank you Amy and every birthing blessing to you: love, strength, power, peace and joy!

I mean, it's occurred to me that undisturbed birth is quite the antidote to the "manosphere". 🙄

Love heals. Love redeems. Love is the truest truth.

Repost ..
I never thought breathing would be the difference
between fearing birth…
and feeling powerful in it.

When my labor started, the first contractions were gentle but steady.
That’s when I realized something important:
the more I tensed, the more it hurt.

🌿 Early labor
I breathed in slowly through my nose…
and exhaled through my mouth like I was blowing out a candle.
I didn’t fight the contraction.
I let it move through me.
Every exhale whispered: you are safe.

💥 When the intensity increased
My body wanted to tighten.
My mind wanted to escape.
So I changed my breath:
short inhales, long, slow exhales with sound.
“mmm… aaaah…”
That’s when I felt my pelvis soften and open
the moment I stopped resisting.

🌊 Transition (the hardest part)
I thought: I can’t do this anymore.
But I slowed my breathing even more.
I moved my body.
I surrendered to the process.
And as the fear faded…
the pain changed too.

👶 When it was time to push
I didn’t force my body.
I breathed downward.
I let my body do what it was designed to do.
No panic.
No tension.
Only trust.

And that’s when it clicked:
✨ Birth isn’t something you survive.
It’s something you learn to work with.

Because knowing how to breathe in every stage,
what to do when the pain rises,
and how to trust your body
changes everything.

It’s not luck.
It’s conscious preparation.

Movement is the key that unlocks the pelvis, while confidence and patience allow the body to shift and expand for the baby’s journey. ❤️‍🔥

Almost 11lbs of the sweetest baby chunk born at home in her bedroom. No cervical checks. No interventions. No one telling her when to push. Freedom to move.

from

Born in just a few pushes. No tearing. Just listening to her body and feeling her baby boy navigate down and knowing when to get in the water to meet him.

Childbirth offers the potential for a woman to reveal her strength

When we leave her in charge ❤️

Modern approach to birth would say do all the scans and over estimate. Schedule her for an induction. Women then walk into motherhood broken from their experiences, not walking into their power. Their confidence undermined. 💕

Birth is for women. Leave her in charge.

This cute rose-gold tea infuser is on its way to Germany today, with a bundle of various teas & salves!

You just slide up the cover, fill the tube with loose leaf herbs or tea, slide the cover back down - then drop into your cup of hot water.

These are fun to use & yield a perfect cup of tea.

This is what I learned:

🌿 Decoction (slow simmer) for roots, bark & berries
🌿 Infusion (hot water poured over herbs, & steep) for aerial parts: flowers, blossoms, leaves, stems.

🌿😍🌿

🌿 How do you make an herbal decoction, and how does it differ from tea?

Did you know that the term "tea" technically only refers to an herbal infusion of Camellia sinensis, the tea plant? Therefore, herbal tea is not actually tea at all! What we often call herbal teas are more accurately described as infusions — hot water poured onto an herbal blend — or decoctions.

Making a decoction is a simple way to enjoy the nourishing gifts of hearty roots, berries, and barks. A decoction is made through gently simmering herbs in water on the stovetop. Simmering hearty plant parts like roots, berries, and barks allows us to more fully extract their constituents.

Try out this spiced morning herbal decoction...

Ingredients you’ll need:
1 T roasted dandelion root
1 T hawthorn berry
1 tsp. orange peel
1/4 tsp. cardamon
1/4 tsp. cinnamon

1. Measure out all of your herbs into the same pot.
2. Add 4 cups of water into the same pot.
3. On a medium-high heat bring your water to a gentle boil.
4. Once your water is boiling, put a lid on the pot and bring it down to simmer.
5. Let your decoction simmer for about twenty to thirty minutes.
6. Remove your pot from the heat and let your decoction cool to a drinking temperature.
7. Strain out your herbs and enjoy your cup of tea!
