Did you know that for years and years and years we used to adertise our monthly birth circles as "free birth circle"
Until we realised that local midwives thought we meant "freebirth circle".
There was a MASSIVE misunderstanding where many medical people thought we PROMOTED freebirth.
When actually, our circles were for any pregnant woman birthing anyway she chose and they were simply free, free of COST.
NOW we make sure we announce the event.
Ie "pregnancy, birth and mother circle"
And we add, "complimentary"
Or, "no cost, just bring your energy"
Or, "following a 35 years tradition, this event is a free event"
Or, " there is no monetary cost for this event, but if you'd like to assist our fundraising, donate and shop at our preloved when you come along"
Funny, historical fact.
PS. Maybe some midwives also think we "promote" freebirth for other reasons too.
Eg maybe they believe that if someone shares a freebirth story, that promotion. (Although when a woman shares a scary, upsetting, traumatic emergency cesarean story...I'm pretty sure she isn't promoting it)
Or, maybe because my birth education truthfully let's women know they have the legal right to birth with whom and where they choose? And that I trust women to make their own autonomous birth decisions based on their own personal needs, wants, desires. (But I call that truth and facts, not promotion)
Or, maybe, because over the years many women have worked with me and been a freebirhing woman and there as been an ASSUMPTION I promoted to them a birth style they then choose to do?
(Well we all know what they say about assumptions!!!)
When in fact, MANY women have turned up in my classes and proudly announced their choice of birth WITHOUT me having any idea of who they are or what they planned or wanted (and to be honest, I've even been shocked to hear their announcement)
But I guess, maybe, they are attracted to ME.
Maybe they came to me to be with an educator who they felt they could be honest with.
My approach is not an easy one, it's a life long challenge to learn and practise full allowing.
My ultimate goal is to ALLOW. Allow women their full choice and autonomy. I work hard to be the best I can be, to be non judgemental, open minded and fully present.
This maybe be judged as wrong by some who believe it is their duty to tell, lecture, and shape another woman's choices .
But it feels right to me.
