Robert’s Story
On the 22/02/2009 my life changed dramatically in a life altering accident whilst swimming at Warners Bay, New South Wales. Because of this accident I am now classified a C5/6 quadriplegic. Medical staff advised me I would spend the rest of my life confined to a wheelchair, being reliant on mobility aids and Support Personnel to assist me to live my daily life. I was only young and unaware of the impact my injury would have on my life, or my family and friends.
After many months in hospital and rehab, I was finally ready to move back into the community. I was receiving my daily supports from agency service providers. When the NDIS was rolled out into NSW, I quickly became one of their Participants as I knew I would have greater independence in this new scheme. I was able to select which agency I wanted to provide my care, searching for a reliable provider that had the flexibility to have supports when I require. Later I moved to a self-managed package employing my own Support Personnel, enabling me to get back some of my independence and personal freedom. Having this control over my support was great, but this freedom came with its own responsibilities and complications. I had many conversations with other Participants about the attributes I had with my own supports, they could see the benefits of being self-managed, only concerned for the complications arising from employing Support Personnel and dealing with the paperwork!
Resulting from many thoughts, discussions and research with current Participants, Support Personnel and the NDIA. My four-year long dream became reality in June 2017- AbilityLiving-MyWay Ltd, an NDIS accredited provider. From my experience Self-Managing provides great benefits, flexibility and freedom as a Participant and not everything needs to be complicated and difficult! Starting AbilityLiving-MyWay to give Participants a voice and to allow them to have the same benefits of being “self-managed” regardless if their plan is:
- Agency Managed - Plan Managed - Self-Managed
