Just spent the day at an inspiring ASPA education workshop and my head is FULL (in the best way!) 🎶✨

I am so excited to bring back a whole collection of new singing games, warm-ups, listening activities and musical challenges to share with my Songbirds. There’s something so special about learning alongside other music educators and then watching that spark come alive in our own little community.

The girls won’t even realise how much they’re learning… they’ll just know we’re having even MORE fun. 💛

Can’t wait for next week!

Feeling so excited to be returning to my opera roots and the magic of large-scale community music!! This June I’ll be singing in ChorusOz performing Verdi’s Aida at the Sydney Opera House — hundreds of voices coming together for one huge, powerful sound. Goosebumps!!!

There is nothing quite like the energy of a massed chorus, and I can’t wait to bring this inspiration back to share with my singing students 💛

I just saw this quote - “Teaching music is teaching students to listen — to sound, to others, and to themselves.”

I was really reminded of this in my groups this week 💛

My singing students worked together to create their own lyrics to our songs; we experimented with how our voices can change 'colour' with different emotions, and even learnt about breath control through bubbles (always a favourite!).

So much of what looks like “just singing” is actually children learning to listen, cooperate, express themselves, and build confidence in their own voices — in every sense of the word.

Feeling very grateful to witness these moments.

One of the things I’m really loving more and more, is noticing just how closely speech, language and singing are connected.

As a speech pathologist, I use so many activities that are naturally rhythmic — clapping patterns, tapping beats, or turning words into little melodic phrases. When rhythm is added, children often find it much easier to coordinate, repeat, and organise their speech.

And it works the other way too. In my singing groups, the children love playing with familiar songs by changing the words, adding silly ideas, or experimenting with different rhythms. While they’re having fun, they’re also building listening skills, timing, sound awareness, and confidence using their voices.

It’s such a lovely overlap — music and communication supporting each other in the most natural, joyful way.

I absolutely love seeing their ideas, creativity, and the beautiful ways they experience music — such a special part of our sessions.

Yesterday’s workshop was a lovely reminder that music can be fun and playful, and that singing creates a natural space for children to listen, copy, take turns, and connect with others who share similar interests. It was beautiful to see kids of all ages feeling confident to use their voices and enjoy singing together as part of such a vibrant music day 🎶

I was very flattered to be invited to host a short vocal workshop within a day filled with so many talented musicians, and grateful to be part of such an inspiring, thoughtfully run event. Many thanks to the talented Niels Bijl and the West Gippsland Concert Band for coordinating such a fabulous event 🥰🎶

Small group singing lessons (Warragul) designed to nurture confidence, communication, and joy. Led by a speech pathologist and classically trained singer (University of Melbourne), with a focus on kindness, safety, and play.

If your child loves to sing but feels shy, unsure, or a little different, this may be a space for them.

Feel free to get in touch — there may even be some new offerings gently coming together behind the scenes. 🤍

Had such a great catch-up yesterday with Nikki from Full Voice Music ✨

It was one of those conversations where more pieces of the puzzle start to fall into place. Connecting (across the seas!) with someone working towards the same goal — supporting kids’ communication, confidence, and joy in music — felt incredibly affirming.

We talked about the real, everyday work of teaching young voices: what genuinely helps kids feel safe to explore their voices, how to keep learning playful and practical, and how technical skills can grow naturally when confidence and curiosity come first.

I love the way Nikki and her team build resources directly from their own teaching with kids — things that have been tried, tested, and refined in real sessions. It mirrors so closely the direction I’m heading in, and it’s exciting to imagine continuing to share ideas and learn from each other as this work keeps evolving.

Feeling inspired, encouraged, and very grateful 🌱🎶

✨ Helping gentle voices feel safe enough to be heard ✨

One of the greatest joys of running my Songbirds group last year was watching the quietest children slowly grow brave. The ones who began with tiny voices, eyes cast downward, barely a whisper… who, by the end, were choosing to sing independently and out loud. (Proud little faces with sparkling eyes, their voices exclaiming “I get to sing a solo!” still give me goosebumps!)

That kind of internal confidence doesn’t come from being pushed or polished. It grows from safety, trust, and connection.

My work sits at the crossroads of music and speech pathology. I’m always listening beneath the singing — noticing regulation, communication, sensory needs, and emotional readiness. This is especially important for children who are shy, sensitive, or a little quirky. (Often these are the kids parents hear singing in their bedrooms, in the garden, or in the shower — for self-regulation, pure joy, and happiness 💙)

Songbirds is about nurturing voices, not pushing polished, “adult” performance. It’s about:
🎶 discovering how your voice works
🎶 feeling safe to explore sound
🎶 knowing deeply that your own voice is beautiful

When children feel understood, nurtured, and encouraged for who they are, confidence follows.
The singing grows naturally from there 💛🎶

If you’ve already been in touch, please sit tight — I’ll be sharing more details about upcoming groups in Warragul soon. And if you’d like to have a chat or ask a question, you’re very welcome to reach out.
