This week our staff celebrated Dietitian Week!

Lauren, a dietitian here at WGHG, shared what her role means to her:
"I love being a dietitian due to the variety of areas we work in. At WGHG, we work with people across the lifespan, from supporting young babies to grow, to helping patients regain strength after illness or surgery, to supporting healthy ageing - no matter your age, we’ve got food for your life stage!" she said.

The WGHG Dietetics team shared some of their favourite foods that are good for the body:
Luke: Chicken or broccoli
Shannon: Berries
Ashleigh: Avocado
Lauren: Poached eggs
Nicole: Eggs (scrambled, poached, in an omelette… any way they come!)
Bella: Yoghurt
Stephanie: Broccolini
Jen: Broccoli and nuts (except peanuts)
Jasmine: Fish (steamed, tinned, baked, grilled or even air-fried)

We're "grapeful" for their amazing work here at WGHG. 🙌

This week, our Palliative Care team hosted a remembrance gathering at our Allied & Community Health Services.

Families, friends, carers and staff came together to pause, reflect and honour loved ones who have passed.

Guests were invited to share messages, quotes or memories on our Remembrance Tree.

We spoke to the wonderful team behind this special event, asking what it means to them:
"It’s nice to stop, think and remember. It’s so important to take a moment to pause together." - Jenny, Clinical Nurse Specialist.

"I love the idea behind it. It’s such a meaningful event to put on for our community. In this type of role, it’s a privilege to care for our patients and to be there to support their families." - Pam, Registered Nurse.

The tree is now on display in the hospital foyer this week as we recognise National Palliative Care Week. We encourage visitors to add to the tree with leafs placed next to the tree.

To celebrate International Day of the Nurse this week, we spoke with our Paediatric nursing team about what their role means to them. 🧡

Jaimee, Grace and Stephanie shared:
"Nursing to us means being there for people during some of their most vulnerable moments and helping them feel safe, supported and cared for. It’s about not only helping patients get better physically but also providing comfort and reassurance to both children and their parents."

They also shared a quote that reflects paediatric nursing:
“Tiny people that need such care,
A paediatric nurse is always there.
Through every tear and every smile,
She makes their world feel safe awhile.
With healing hands and heart so kind,
She leaves a little magic behind.”

Happy International Day of the Nurse!

Today we celebrate the dedication, compassion and skill of our nurses, who make a difference in the lives of patients and families every single day.

We spoke to Nurse Unit Manager Tania about what she finds rewarding about her role:
"We love giving back to our community and supporting them through some really challenging times."

This year’s theme is "Our Nurses. Our Future. Empowered Nurses Save Lives."

Thank you for all that you do. 🧡

WGHG is thrilled to welcome two new groups of Medical Students who will be furthering their clinical skills with us over the coming months.

Pictured here is one of our new student groups during their recent April orientation week. We hope they enjoy their time at WGHG, gaining experience across a broad range of patients and developing their skills in a community setting.

Students will be working alongside our experienced Generalist Physicians and consultants, who bring a wide range of expertise and are passionate about teaching and mentorship.

“As clinicians ourselves, we love providing education and supporting possible future staff, while showcasing what WGHG has to offer,” said Clinical Nurse Specialist Alissa Wallace.

The students, who are completing their studies through Monash University, will undertake a 16‑week rotation, supported by a team of dedicated mentors.

Welcome to WGHG! We’re glad to have you with us! ✨

Thank you Paul!

We were delighted to visit Paul in the Haemodialysis Unit to personally thank him for the incredible efforts that helped make a real difference for our patients.

Last year during October, Paul took on an impressive swimming challenge, covering a remarkable 55 kilometres, an incredible 2,200 laps and in doing so raised over $5,000 for WGHG.

Thanks to Paul’s dedication and generosity, the Haemodialysis Unit has been able to purchase brand new scales and three new waiting room chairs, improving comfort and care for patients and visitors alike.

From everyone at WGHG, we are sincerely grateful for community members like Paul who so generously support our fundraising efforts. Your commitment truly makes a difference.

Meet Kelsie! 👋💛
Kelsie is a Clinical Midwife Specialist here at WGHG.

Kelsie began her journey with WGHG eight years ago, first joining us while on placement before returning to complete her graduate year and she’s been part of the team ever since!

For International Day of the Midwife, Kelsie shared what midwifery means to her and why she loves working at WGHG: the strong community feel, the tight‑knit team, and celebrating the people who make our hospital so special.

💙 “Best. Job. Ever.” 💙

📖 Read her full interview below:

🎤 What inspired you to become a midwife?
“I always had a goal of helping people. With my grandma being a nurse, and after watching One Born Every Minute, I was really drawn to the role of midwifery.”

🎤 What do you find most rewarding about being a midwife?
“It’s such a privilege to be there to support women through what is a very emotional, physical, and vulnerable experience. Being able to support families through both joyful and difficult times is incredibly special."

🎤 What do you enjoy about working at WGHG?
“I love the strong community feel. We’re a tight‑knit team, and it truly is a unique environment where you know everyone you pass in the halls. I really enjoy celebrating the people who make up our unique team.”

🎤 What do you wish more people understood about midwifery?
“I wish more people knew that we actually deliver babies and that we are there for the entire journey, from start to finish.”

🎤 How has this role shaped you as a person?
“In my own life, I never assume what someone might be going through. I’m more empathetic, and the role really puts things into perspective. Each day is another miracle, and that feeling never goes away.”

🎤 What advice would you give to someone considering becoming a midwife?
“It’s hard work and a long journey of studying, but it’s so worth it and incredibly rewarding. I love my job and the people I work with.”

Following on from International Day of the Midwife yesterday, we will be celebrating our wonderful midwives all week.

Yesterday, to mark the occasion and say thank you, Michelle, our Deputy Director of Clinical Operations, visited the Maternity Ward to present our team with a gift hamper.

We asked Associate Midwife Manager Katrina what being a midwife means to her.
“We all love working with women and supporting them to have the best experience possible on their birthing journey,” she said.
