If you go into spontaneous labour, chances are you'll be at home and will need to drive to the hospital.

Here are our top tips for that making car trip run a lot smoother:
🚗Have your bags packed from around 36-37 weeks, and keep them in the boot of the car. Keep snack bags ready to go as well. That way, you and your partner won't be frantically running around packing in labour.
🚗Keep a towel, vomit bag and change of un**es/ shorts in the car in case your waters break, or you become nauseous on the drive to the hospital.
🚗Rewarm your heat pack before leaving home in the hopes it will last for the whole journey.
🚗Apply your TENs machine before leaving home if you plan on using it during the car trip.
🚗Keep fuel in the car, and top it up regularly from around 36 weeks onwards. The last thing you need is to run out of fuel on the way to the hospital while in labour.
🚗Have bub's car seat or capsule installed from around 36 weeks onwards, and practice strapping a doll into it to make sure you know how it works.
🚗Have a calming playlist or CD ready to play in the car to help calm your and your drivers' nerves.
🚗Keep a pillow and eye mask on the back seat for you to use if you need them on the drive.
🚗Have a practice run before the big day arrives so you know how to get there, how long it takes, where to go, where to park and what to expect.

If you're actively in labour, it's not safe to drive yourself to the hospital. Instead, consider asking a friend or family member to drive you, catch a taxi or call an ambulance. If you're on the way to the hospital already and think you're about to have bub, find a safe place to pull over, get your towels ready and call 000 for further instruction.

Amniotic Fluid is important for many things. It acts as a cushion to protect baby from harm if the abdomen is hit, and it also protect the umbilical cord from injury. The fluid itself has antibacterial properties to protect baby from infectious agents. It’s also important for the development of baby in the womb. Baby swallows the fluid throughout the day, absorbs nutrients from the fluid, and then pees the fluid back out to replace it.

Amniotic fluid is mainly made up of babys urine and lung secretions along with other nutrients such as carbohydrates and vitamins. It’s clear in color because of its low protein concentration.

There are two variations from the normal fluid amount that usually require further testing and intervention. They are both diagnosed by ultrasound. There are two methods Amnitoic Fluid Index (AFI) or Single Deepest Pocket (SDP). AFI where they look at the four quadrants of the belly and measure the largest pocket of fluid in the quadrant and add them all up. SDP is they look for the largest pocket of fluid in the whole belly.

Oligohydramnios is when there is too little fluid. When AFI is less than 5cm or a SDP less than 2cm. This can be found after term and induction is usually offered at diagnosis. Decreased fetal movement is sometimes reported and when the ultrasound is done this is found often. This can be an issue because if there is not a lot of fluid this could increase the risk of an umbilical cord injury.

Polyhydramnios is when there is too much fluid. AFI over 24cm or SDP of 8cm or more. Depending on the severity of it will determine the plan of action by the team. This can be found when the belly is measuring 3 weeks or more ahead. It can be very uncomfortable because it can push against the diaphragm and make it hard to breath. It also is stretching out the uterus more than normal so could irritate the uterus and when labor starts the contractions could be weaker. When there is too much fluid it can make it harder for the baby to engage into the pelvis.

How do the combs work? They are a simple, effective and wonderful pain management tool that help women in labour as they act as a powerful distraction or a focal point by activating the Gate Control Theory. Researchers have long observed that factors such as thoughts, emotions, and expectations can....

❗️ NO ❗️

Surrogates are not paid in Australia. They do have their surrogacy and pregnancy related costs covered for by the Intended Parents (IPs).

❤️ Surrogacy in Australia is altruistic and is legal ✅
🧡 Commercial surrogacy is illegal in Australia

Why would you do it if you can’t get paid?
💛 They do it for friendship and love
💚 Surrogates often enjoy being pregnant and giving birth and want to experience that again
💝 To ‘pay it forward’ to help others, or from compassion if they have struggled with their own fertility

What costs are allowed?
💙 Allowable expenses include maternity clothes, pregnancy massages, physio, vitamins, take away food when too ill or tired to cook, meal vouchers, petrol to/from appointments, extra childcare when struggling,
💜 Loss of wages is an allowable expense, including time for appointments, illness when pregnant and maternity leave.
💖 Surrogates often have a debit card linked to their IPs bank account to make these purchases easier

Are you thinking about being a surrogate?
Either for strangers or for friends/family?

Come and learn more in a free, weekly, Wednesday night webinar. One week the co-host is an experienced surrogate, one week a parent through surrogacy.

Let me let you in on a little secret. 🤫⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Your cervix is not a crystal ball... 🔮 It cannot predict when labour will start. Nor can it predict if you will deliver before, after or even on your due date. The cervix can do many wonderful things but let’s not give the cervix more credit than it is due. A cervix cannot predict the future!” - Marie Pokluda⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Did you know that there is no set pattern for cervical change? Your cervix will open and close in response to many different factors, both physiological and environmental.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In my birthwork, I have witnessed people who have gone from fully closed, basically, NOTHING happening at a doctor's appointment, to pushing that baby out in under 24 hours! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I have also had people walk around 5cm dilated for weeks with no sign of labour in sight. It's also not unheard of for it to take hours to get to 6cm and then suddenly get to fully dilated in less than an hour. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The body is magical and mystical...but it does not contain a crystal ball!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
