If you go into spontaneous labour, chances are you'll be at home and will need to drive to the hospital.
Here are our top tips for that making car trip run a lot smoother:
🚗Have your bags packed from around 36-37 weeks, and keep them in the boot of the car. Keep snack bags ready to go as well. That way, you and your partner won't be frantically running around packing in labour.
🚗Keep a towel, vomit bag and change of un**es/ shorts in the car in case your waters break, or you become nauseous on the drive to the hospital.
🚗Rewarm your heat pack before leaving home in the hopes it will last for the whole journey.
🚗Apply your TENs machine before leaving home if you plan on using it during the car trip.
🚗Keep fuel in the car, and top it up regularly from around 36 weeks onwards. The last thing you need is to run out of fuel on the way to the hospital while in labour.
🚗Have bub's car seat or capsule installed from around 36 weeks onwards, and practice strapping a doll into it to make sure you know how it works.
🚗Have a calming playlist or CD ready to play in the car to help calm your and your drivers' nerves.
🚗Keep a pillow and eye mask on the back seat for you to use if you need them on the drive.
🚗Have a practice run before the big day arrives so you know how to get there, how long it takes, where to go, where to park and what to expect.
If you're actively in labour, it's not safe to drive yourself to the hospital. Instead, consider asking a friend or family member to drive you, catch a taxi or call an ambulance. If you're on the way to the hospital already and think you're about to have bub, find a safe place to pull over, get your towels ready and call 000 for further instruction.
