⚠️ Important Update on Paracetamol Sales & Safety ⚠️
As of February 1, 2024, new regulations have changed how paracetamol is sold:
This means you may be asked questions by pharmacy staff before we can supply you with paracetamol. Please be patient with pharmacy staff as these measures are to help everyone in the community.
✅ Pharmacies: The largest pack available on the shelf is now 50 tablets. Packs of more than 50 tablets are now Schedule 3 (S3) medications, meaning they are kept behind the pharmacy counter, and you’ll need to speak to a pharmacist to purchase them.
✅ Supermarkets & Convenience Stores: The largest pack available is now 16 tablets or capsules.
Paracetamol Overdose – What You Need to Know
Paracetamol is the most widely used pain relief. For most people it is safe when used correctly, but taking too much can cause serious liver damage and can be life-threatening.
🔹 Maximum Dose: Paracetamol is in many products. Such as mixed pain relief with ibuprofen such as Nuromol and Mersynofen. It’s also in many cold and flu preparations. Please check the directions the packaging to ensure you do not take to much. The recommended maximum dose for adults is 4 grams (4000 mg) per day, which equals 8 x 500 mg tablets in 24 hours (with at least 4–6 hours between doses). Exceeding this amount increases the risk of toxicity.
🔹 Symptoms of Overdose: Early symptoms may be mild or absent but can include nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, and loss of appetite. After 24–48 hours, liver damage can occur, leading to serious complications.
🔹 What to Do in Case of Overdose: Seek immediate medical help—call Poison Information Centre (13 11 26), even if symptoms are not present. Early treatment is critical in preventing serious harm.
These changes aim to improve safety and reduce the risk of overdose. If you have any questions about pain relief options, speak to your pharmacist—they’re always happy to help!
