How long can you have skin cancer without knowing?

Some types of skin cancer are slow-growing and can linger undetected for a decade or more.

This makes early detection critical for a better chance of successful treatment.

The most common types of skin cancers are basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma.

Basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma account for approximately 95% of all skin cancers, and while they are less likely to spread to other parts of the body, if left untreated, they can grow and cause disfigurement.

Melanoma, on the other hand, is less common but more deadly, often spreading to other organs even when it is less than a millimetre thick.

Prevention is always better than cure.

Does melanoma make you feel ill?

What happens when skin cancer is left untreated and has progressed to a late stage?

Late-stage melanoma can be a devastating diagnosis as it has metastasised to other parts of the body, making it much more difficult to treat.

Signs to look out for include new or changing moles, sores that won't heal, and lumps under the skin.

If you notice any of these symptoms, it is important to seek medical attention immediately.

Remember, prevention is the best defence against skin cancer. Make sure to protect your skin and get regular skin checks from a dermatologist.

Don't wait until it's too late and take care of your skin today!

Does skin cancer spread fast?

Melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, can rapidly progress and become life-threatening in as little as 6 weeks.

Without treatment, it can spread to other parts of the body and lead to serious complications.

Here are some important facts to keep in mind:

- Sun exposure is a major risk factor for skin cancer. Protect your skin by wearing sunscreen and avoiding sunburns.

- Regular self-exams can help you detect skin changes early. Look for new moles or changes in the size, shape, or colour of existing moles.

- Don't forget to check for suspicious spots in less visible areas, such as your scalp, between your toes, and under your fingernails and toenails.

- If you notice any concerning skin changes, don't hesitate to see a dermatologist. Early detection and treatment can save your life.

Remember, prevention and early detection are crucial in the fight against skin cancer. Stay informed and take care of your skin!

Did you know that Australia has the highest rates of skin cancer in the world?

And that it's the most common cancer among people aged 15-39? Scary, right?

But don't worry, protecting your skin is easy - just slip, slop, slap, and wrap!

That means slipping on a shirt, slopping on sunscreen, slapping on a hat, and wrapping on sunglasses.

Plus, make sure to avoid the sun during peak UV times (10am-4pm), regularly check your skin for any unusual moles or spots, and see a doctor immediately if you notice any changes.

Your skin is your biggest asset - show it some love and protect it from the sun's harmful rays.

Here are 7 signs of skin cancer you might not know about:

1. New or changing spots that aren't brown.
2. Skin changes in odd places.
3. A lesion that bleeds.
4. A painful lesion.
5. A lesion that itches.
6. A spot with a crater-like appearance.
7. Rapid growth of a spot.

Remember, skin cancer is the most common cancer in Australia, and it can be deadly if left untreated.

Make sure to monitor your skin for any changes, and follow the ABCDE rule when it comes to moles:

- A is for asymmetrical shape
- B is for irregular border
- C is for changes in colour
- D is for a diameter greater than 6 millimetres
- E is for evolving or changing in any way

Early detection is key, and practising sun safety can greatly reduce your risk. So, wear sunscreen, seek shade during peak hours, and cover up with clothing and a hat.

Let's protect our skin and prevent skin cancer!
