🤰🏽Hypno Birth Story part 3...

The Dr completed a vaginal examination and advised I was 10cm dilated, she checked baby’s position and baby was still ROP. At this point the Dr said I could try for a vaginal delivery but I may require use of instruments if baby didn’t turn during the delivery process.

The midwife identified baby was showing signs of fatigue and we didn’t have a long time to push, so we started pushing hard right away and tried various positions that I could push in with my numb left leg- my favourite position was with my legs in the stirrups and me playing a game of tug of war with the midwife using a towel. After 1hour and 7 minutes of pushing our baby girl was born! She changed position during pushing and no instrumental intervention was required. My husband and I didn’t know the s*x of our baby until she was born and it was so special to meet her and find out who she was!

I am so thankful to Sarah for the time and education she gave us during our Hypnobirthing classes. We would have had a very different birthing outcome if I wasn’t able to use the knowledge and tools we acquired during Hypnobirthing throughout my labour and delivery. We were so happy with our birthing experience and it was a surreal moment meeting our baby!

🤰🏽Hypno Birth Story part 2...

After another 3-4 hours at my next vaginal exam, it was found I hadn’t dilated any further and labour hadn’t progressed. Sometime during these hours I had begun using the gas as part of my cascade of interventions as outlined on my birth plan. I had been labouring for over 30hours at this stage and contractions were getting more difficult to manage, I started to consider an epidural and the midwives suggested the shower. I moved to the shower and used one shower head on my tummy whilst my husband put one on my back, I also used the gas in the shower and I had found my happy place. I was managing contractions really well in the shower, until our baby began demonstrating signs of fetal distress on the monitor. I had to get out of the shower and the Dr came in and advised we needed to start synthetic oxytocin to double my contractions. It was at this point I identified I needed an epidural to manage if my contractions were to start doubling in frequency. At 11pm on Saturday evening I had the epidural, once it kicked in I was able to totally relax- I ate some sandwiches and even had a nap!

At 2am the Dr advised that the baby was demonstrating fetal distress and not responding well to the synthetic oxytocin so it had to be stopped, the Dr undertook monitoring to identify the baby’s position and found it was ROP (posterior). I was then told I may have to have an emergency caesarean. I implemented the BRAINS acronym at this point and asked the Dr what else I could do and how much time I had. After speaking with the supervising consultant the Dr advised we could have two hours to see if the baby’s heart rate settled. I moved to an all fours position on the bed and alternated between swaying and resting back on my hips for about an hour- until my left leg went numb from the epidural and I had to turn around and rest on my back. When the Dr returned she advised the baby’s heart rate had settled and the team had been able to recommence the synthetic oxytocin- she and the midwife said they had never seen a baby show so much distress and then return to such a calm state!

🤰🏽Hypno Birth Story...part 1:

Our first baby arrived at 5.27am on a Sunday morning after a nearly 40hour labour experience. Following the delivery of our baby girl, one of the midwives acknowledged that it was clear my husband and I had undertaken high quality labour and delivery education prior to birth which resulted in us having a positive experience and delivery outcome- I attribute a lot of my knowledge to the Hypnobirthing classes we completed and my husband raves about them too!

My labour started spontaneously at 41weeks gestation at 1pm on a Friday afternoon. I laboured at home and went into the hospital to double check fetal movements at 4pm on the Friday, we then returned home to continue labouring. At 1am on Saturday morning my first waters broke, I was expecting a big gush like the movies and this was more of a slow trickle so I wasn’t actually aware they had broken until much later when the midwives completed a swab test and confirmed they had in fact broken. I continued labouring at home from 1am and at 9.30am on Saturday morning my husband and I headed into the hospital.

My first vaginal exam indicated that I was 4cm dilated, I used strategies such as breathing techniques, aromatherapy, squeezing a stress ball, vocalisations, imagery, the bath and my husband used acupressure, the rebozo scarf (my fave!) and affirmations as I laboured to 8cm. We also listened to the Tranquil Chambers music track on repeat and used the Surge of the Sea track throughout labour too.

To be continued....

My favourite late night message. This lovely couple completed the online course due to shift work and a toddler. Lots of text messages and some amazing continuity with their midwife, they were able to achieve their dream birth.
