PCOS has officially been renamed PMOS — Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome.
The updated name reflects a broader understanding that the condition may involve hormonal, metabolic and reproductive health factors, rather than only ovarian cysts.
The name of PCOS may be changing… but in Chinese Medicine, the approach has always been about treating the person, not just the diagnosis.
Many people are surprised to learn that not everyone with PCOS has ovarian cysts, which is one reason experts have questioned whether the original name accurately reflects the condition.
Regardless of what it is called, the symptoms can still have a significant impact on day-to-day life:
• Irregular or absent cycles
• Acne
• Weight fluctuations
• Fatigue
• Fertility challenges
• Mood changes
• Excess hair growth
• Digestive symptoms
In Chinese Medicine, treatment is based on the individual presentation and underlying pattern of symptoms.
Two people with the same diagnosis may receive different treatments depending on their presentation, health history and treatment goals.
Treatment may focus on supporting:
• Menstrual cycle regulation
• Ovulation and reproductive health
• Stress management
• Sleep and energy levels
• Digestive and metabolic function
• Overall wellbeing
While the medical terminology may evolve over time, the goal in Chinese Medicine remains the same: supporting the person as a whole, rather than focusing solely on a diagnosis label.
