Current evidence in Di ages that two children in every classroom present with a Developmental Language Disorder.

Early identification and specialist support are crucial to help these children achieve the best possible outcomes long term 🙌.

Speech Pathology Australia supports Developmental Language Disorder Awareness Day on Friday 16 October because more light needs to be shed on a hidden condition that affects on average two children in every classroom. DLD is a condition that causes difficulties with speech, language understanding, communication, and reading (with an associated high risk of dyslexia).

Developmental Language Disorder is now the accepted term for language difficulties where the language disorder has no other differentiating or influencing condition (e.g. the absence of Autism, Down Syndrome, Fragile X, etc.).

The term DLD describes children who are likely to have a language problem that endures into middle childhood and beyond; without diagnosis and specialist support this condition has a significant impact on their everyday social interactions and schooling.

If you are concerned a child you know has DLD, contact a speech pathologist. Find a speech pathologist via the Speech Pathology Australia website.> https://bit.ly/3k4PNjx

There have been a few changes at Hodgson Vale Speech over the past month!

🏠 We have moved into our new clinic space! We are now located at 136 Mort Street Toowoomba. There’s plenty of on-site parking and we now have wheelchair access available for our clients.

🎥 Following our transition to Telehealth only services during tightened restrictions, we have made the decision to recommence some face-to-face therapy sessions. We will also be keeping Telehealth services as an option for families who are high risk or would prefer to continue to minimise their community outings. Please contact the clinic to discuss how you would like to proceed with future appointments.

🦠 With the recommencement of face to face appointments, we kindly request that if you or anyone in your family is unwell that you cancel your appointment or arrange for a Telehealth session for that day instead. Healthy clients = healthy therapists!

🤱🏼Erin will be returning from her maternity leave this week and will be taking over Mel’s clients as she commences her own maternity leave. Thanks everyone for your patience during this transition time and welcome back Erin!

We are looking forward to seeing you all at 136 Mort Street soon!

Mel, Sarah and Erin

Some food for thought if you are concerned your child may have a language delay.

EVERY SLP, pediatrician, teacher, pediatric therapist/interventionist, and parent needs to see this and know the difference between milestones and averages. BOTH of these are important to know and consider when looking at a child’s development, and it’s critical to know the difference. Why? Because many parents (and pediatricians) are interpreting milestones as averages and as a result, children in need of assessment and likely intervention are NOT getting referred. In fact, when you look up milestones on the Mayoclinic and WebMD they are EASILY confused as averages as they use phrases like “say as many as 10 words!” - as if that was a lot. This leads parents to think their children are “not that far behind” when they have less words than the milestone- when in fact, the child could be significantly behind. So please understand milestones are minimums and if your child is at or below that level, they are in the bottom 10% of kids their age- which means intervention is most likely needed. It’s also important to understand the average isn’t a maximum, it’s what 50% of children are able to do- so half of the children at that age are even higher than that number. If your child is at or below the milestones listed below, please consider a speech and language evaluation!

StorySign is an app (available on Android, Google and Apple devices) that translates children’s books into sign language. A lovely resource for families with children who are hearing impaired or use sign to assist with language development.
