“Why am I sore after physio?” 🤔

It’s one of the most common questions we get — and the answer is actually a good sign 🙌

After physiotherapy, it’s completely normal to feel sore for 24–72 hours. Here’s why:

🔹 We’re waking up muscles
Muscles that haven’t been used properly get reactivated → they can feel tender after.

🔹 Tissue adaptation
Your body is responding to new movement, loading, or treatment (like dry needling, manual therapy, or exercise).

🔹 Inflammatory response
A small, controlled inflammatory response helps your body repair and strengthen.

🔹 Similar to post-gym soreness (DOMS)
It’s your body saying: “Hey, I’m adapting!”

✅ What’s normal?

✔ Mild–moderate soreness
✔ Feels like a dull ache or stiffness
✔ Improves within 2–3 days
✔ Eases with gentle movement

🚩 When to let us know

❌ Sharp or worsening pain
❌ Pain lasting >3–4 days
❌ Significant swelling or loss of function

💡 Pro tip

Keep moving (gently!), stay hydrated, and follow your exercise plan — this actually helps recovery faster.

Your body isn’t breaking down… it’s building back stronger 💪

📅 If you’ve been putting off treatment because of this — don’t! We guide you every step of the way.

🏃‍♂️ Why Do Professional Athletes Recover Faster Than the Rest of Us?

We often see elite athletes return to sport quickly after injuries and wonder…
“Why is my recovery taking longer?”

The truth is, athletes often have advantages that everyday people simply don’t.

Here are a few key differences:

🏅 1. Time to Recover
Professional athletes treat recovery as their full-time job.
Many everyday patients are juggling work, family, and life responsibilities, leaving less time for rehab exercises, recovery strategies, and rest.

💰 2. Financial Resources
Elite athletes often have access to large medical teams including physiotherapists, strength coaches, doctors, massage therapists, dietitians, and sports psychologists.
Most people rely on one or two health professionals and must budget carefully for appointments.

📅 3. Frequency of Treatment
Athletes may receive daily treatment and rehabilitation.
Most patients attend physio once every 1–2 weeks, meaning progress relies heavily on home exercises.

🧠 4. Rehabilitation Participation
Athletes often complete multiple rehab sessions per day because their career depends on it.
For many people, finding 10–20 minutes per day for exercises can already be challenging.

📊 5. Adherence to Programs
Elite athletes typically follow rehab programs with near-perfect adherence.
For everyday patients, life happens — work deadlines, kids, fatigue, and stress can impact consistency.

🎂 6. Age & Physical Baseline
Many professional athletes are young and highly conditioned, with excellent strength, mobility, and cardiovascular fitness before injury.
Recovery can take longer if we’re starting from a lower baseline of strength or fitness.

😴 7. Recovery Environment
Athletes prioritize sleep, nutrition, hydration, and recovery strategies as part of their training.
For many people, these areas can be difficult to optimise due to lifestyle pressures.

💡 What This Means For Your Recovery

Even though most of us aren’t professional athletes, great results are still achievable with the right approach:

✔️ Do your exercises consistently
✔️ Prioritise sleep and recovery
✔️ Communicate with your physio if something isn’t working
✔️ Be patient with your body
✔️ Celebrate small improvements

Remember:
Recovery isn’t a race — it’s a process.

Fracture Symptoms: How to Tell If You’ve Broken a Bone

After a fall, accident, or sporting injury, it’s not always easy to tell whether you’re dealing with a sprain or a fracture. Some fractures don’t cause obvious deformity, and many people can still move or walk despite a broken bone.

You may have a fractured bone if you experience:
• Sharp or worsening pain
• Swelling or bruising that appears quickly
• Pain with weight-bearing or movement
• Tenderness directly over a bone
• A limb that looks deformed or out of shape
• Reduced function — you can’t use it normally
• Pain that doesn’t settle after a few days of rest

Fracture or Sprain?

Sprains and strains usually improve gradually. A fracture is more likely when pain is localised over the bone, symptoms worsen rather than improve, or movement and weight-bearing remain painful.

When Should You Get It Checked?

You should seek assessment if:
• Pain is severe or worsening
• You can’t bear weight
• The area looks deformed
• Symptoms aren’t improving

Early assessment and imaging (such as an X-ray) can significantly improve recovery outcomes.

How Physiotherapy Can Help

A physiotherapist can assess your injury, determine whether imaging is needed, and guide safe management and rehabilitation. Early clarity helps prevent complications and speeds recovery.

Unsure if it’s a fracture?
Early assessment leads to better recovery.

⚡ Radiculopathy – it’s not “just back pain” ⚡

Ever had pain that travels down your arm or leg?
That tingling, burning, sharp or electric feeling may be radiculopathy.

🔹 Radiculopathy occurs when a spinal nerve is irritated or compressed
🔹 Common causes include disc bulges, joint stiffness, inflammation or postural overload
🔹 Symptoms can include pain, pins & needles, numbness, weakness or altered sensation down the limb

The good news? 🙌
Most cases respond very well to targeted physiotherapy.

✔️ Thorough assessment to identify the source
✔️ Individualised exercise to reduce nerve irritation
✔️ Mobility, strength and load management strategies
✔️ Education so you understand what’s happening and why

Early assessment matters – especially if symptoms are spreading, persistent, or affecting strength.

If nerve pain is stopping you from moving comfortably, we’re here to help 💜

☀️ Getting fit for summer is a great goal — just be mindful how you build into it.

One of the most common reasons we see injuries this time of year is a rapid increase in training load.
While fitness can improve quickly, tendons and connective tissue adapt much more slowly.

Sudden spikes in activity can contribute to conditions such as:
• Plantar fasciitis
• Achilles tendinopathy
• Other overuse injuries (e.g jumpers knee)

✔️ Gradual progression
✔️ Adequate recovery
✔️ Listening to early warning signs

A smarter approach now can help you stay active, consistent and pain-free heading into summer.

🦵 Preparing for a Knee Replacement? Start Physio Before Surgery

Did you know that pre-surgery physiotherapy (prehab) can significantly improve your recovery after a knee replacement?

Getting stronger and more mobile before surgery helps you:
✔️ Build leg strength
✔️ Improve knee movement
✔️ Learn post-op exercises in advance
✔️ Reduce anxiety and boost confidence
✔️ Recover faster after surgery

💡 Prehab physiotherapy focuses on:
• Strengthening your quads, glutes, and calves
• Improving knee straightening and bending
• Practising walking, stairs, and transfers
• Education on swelling management and pain control
• Setting realistic post-surgery goals

Patients who complete prehab often feel more prepared, more confident, and more in control going into surgery.

📍 If you’re scheduled for a knee replacement — or thinking about one — a personalised prehab program can make a real difference to your outcome.

📞 Book your pre-surgery physiotherapy session today and set yourself up for a smoother recovery.
