Fracture Symptoms: How to Tell If You’ve Broken a Bone
After a fall, accident, or sporting injury, it’s not always easy to tell whether you’re dealing with a sprain or a fracture. Some fractures don’t cause obvious deformity, and many people can still move or walk despite a broken bone.
You may have a fractured bone if you experience:
• Sharp or worsening pain
• Swelling or bruising that appears quickly
• Pain with weight-bearing or movement
• Tenderness directly over a bone
• A limb that looks deformed or out of shape
• Reduced function — you can’t use it normally
• Pain that doesn’t settle after a few days of rest
Fracture or Sprain?
Sprains and strains usually improve gradually. A fracture is more likely when pain is localised over the bone, symptoms worsen rather than improve, or movement and weight-bearing remain painful.
When Should You Get It Checked?
You should seek assessment if:
• Pain is severe or worsening
• You can’t bear weight
• The area looks deformed
• Symptoms aren’t improving
Early assessment and imaging (such as an X-ray) can significantly improve recovery outcomes.
How Physiotherapy Can Help
A physiotherapist can assess your injury, determine whether imaging is needed, and guide safe management and rehabilitation. Early clarity helps prevent complications and speeds recovery.
