In the media recently there has been a bit of talk around allergies ….
Unfortunately a person can develop an allergy to anything at anytime 😞
So let’s clear up a few facts….
What is an allergy and how does it differ to an intolerance???
An allergy is an immune mediated response to a protein that the person has been exposed too …
Signs of an allergic response occurs rapidly and can include; nausea, vomiting, swelling, redness, hives and swelling of the airway, anaphylaxis is an extreme allergic response. Allergy reactions can be life threatening and often require medical attention!!!
An intolerance does not have the same involvement of the immune system and will not show up in allergy testing. Signs may take from 2 hours to several days from exposure to symptoms and are often difficult to narrow down 😞
Common signs of intolerance are nausea, belching, abdominal cramps, diarrhoea, headache , occasionally vomiting and itchy skin (eczema) are present.
So what can we do if we are experiencing signs of an allergy or intolerance???
In the case of a suspected allergic reaction it is important to seek medical Attention…. If the reaction is progressing quickly, if there are breathing difficulties then call 000 (Australia)
In the case of a suspected intolerance then fill in a food and symptom diary for a few weeks and make an appointment with your personal health professional (eg naturopath etc) for guidance on navigating the world of intolerances
