You have the right to feel safe, heard and supported during pregnancy.

If you are living with a disability, your care should be adjusted to meet your needs - not the other way around.

Support during pregnancy might look like:

• Extra time at appointments
• Information explained in a way that works for you
• Physical accessibility adjustments
• Seeing the same care providers where possible

You also have the right to:

• Be involved in all decisions about your care
• Ask questions and take time to decide
• Have a support person with you
• Receive respectful, non-judgemental care

If something doesn’t feel right, it is okay to speak up or ask for more support.

At DMC Support, we help you navigate pregnancy with care that is inclusive, individualised and built around you. We can attend appointments with you and advocate for you in the healthcare system if required.

What’s one thing that helps you feel more supported in healthcare?

Did you know sign language isn’t universal? Most countries have their own - in Australia, it’s called Auslan.

On Auslan Day, we’re reminded that communication looks different for everyone - but care and support should still be accessible. Small changes can make a big difference to how safe and supported someone feels.

When supporting someone who uses Auslan, having a qualified interpreter is best practice. But there are also tools that can help in the moment - like video relay services, interpreting apps, and Auslan dictionary apps to support basic communication.

These can help bridge gaps, but they don’t replace the value of a qualified interpreter when it’s needed.

What’s one thing healthcare providers could do better when it comes to communication?

Making decisions in pregnancy, birth, and parenting can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re being given lots of information or pressure to decide quickly.

The BRAIN framework is a simple tool to help you slow down, ask questions, and make informed choices that feel right for you.

B - Benefits
What are the benefits of this option?
How might this help me or my baby?

R - Risks
What are the risks or possible downsides?
How likely are they, and how serious could they be?

A - Alternatives
Are there other options available?
What could we do instead?

I - Intuition
What feels right for me?
What does my gut say?

N - Nothing
What happens if I wait or do nothing for now?
Is this decision urgent, or do I have time?

Remember: You have the right to ask questions, take your time, and be involved in every decision about your care!

[Image Description: An orange graphic titled “Using the BRAIN framework”. Five rounded bars list each step: Benefits, Risks, Alternatives, Intuition, and Nothing, each with a short guiding question to support informed decision-making.]

Becoming a big sibling is a big moment 💛

This World Siblings Day, we’re celebrating the special bond that begins when a new baby joins the family - and supporting parents as they navigate feeding, connection and caring for more than one little person.

Preparing your toddler ahead of time can help them feel secure, included and ready for the transition. Small things like involving them, protecting one-on-one time, and creating a calm feeding space can make a big difference.

However your family grows, you don’t have to do it alone 💛 See more tips here: aba.asn.au/newbaby.

Advocating for yourself in labour -
Save this post for when you need it most!

Labour can be unpredictable.
Plans can change, things can move quickly, and you might be in pain, tired or overwhelmed.

Advocating for yourself means making sure your voice, preferences and needs are heard… even in those stressful moments.

Here are some ways to advocate for yourself during labour:

• Bring a support plan or birth plan/preferences

• Have a support person (Partner, Mum/Sister, Support Worker, Doula)

• Use the BRAIN framework for decision making
(Benefits, Risks, Alternatives, Intuition, What if we do Nothing?)

• Ask for information in a way that works for you
(Easy-Read documents, visual explanations, Auslan interpreter etc)

• Ask to speak with the shift team leader for a second opinion

At DMC Support, we help you feel prepared, supported and confident to speak up during labour and birth.
Reach out via our website if you want more support during your pregnancy, birth and parenting journey. 🧡

Today is World Bipolar Day.
World Bipolar Day is celebrated each year on March 30th - this is the birthday of Vincent Van Gogh, who was diagnosed as having bipolar disorder after he died.

Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition affecting mood. It was previously known as manic depression and can cause extreme highs (mania) and lows (depression) in mood. Sometimes it can cause psychotic symptoms. The exact cause of Bipolar isn’t known, but thought to be a mix of environmental as well as genetic factors.

Managing symptoms with medication and treatment can help as well as making sure a person has good sleeping, exercise and eating routines.

This is particularly important for a parent with Bipolar as lack of sleep with a young baby, and the stress of new parenting can be overwhelming at times. It is important to have a plan before baby is born to support parents with bipolar through the first year.

Purple Day 💜

Epilepsy is more than seizures - it can impact daily life, independence and confidence. It can bring unpredictability and challenges, with moments where support really matters.

One of our midwives, Emily, lives with epilepsy. She shares:
“Because I live with epilepsy, I understand how important it is to feel safe, supported and listened to - especially during pregnancy and parenting.”

At DMC Support, we provide individualised disability support, including pregnancy and parenting support for people with epilepsy and other disabilities.
Support looks different for everyone - and we’re here to work alongside you.

Wear purple to show support, raise awareness and help create a more inclusive community. 💜
