After many years of calm hands and kind words, Dr Jon Clarke has officially retired!

Jon was never “just” an anaesthetist. He helped shape the culture of Vista from the very beginning. He came in early. He joined every safety huddle. He made time for every question, and he cared deeply about making sure patients and staff felt safe and supported. He brought a love of teaching into every day. Nothing was too small to explain. No one was ever too busy for help. Many of our team, both here and in the public system, still carry lessons they learned from Jon. We already miss his morning ritual of a pot of tea, followed by an espresso.

Now his focus turns to travelling with his wife and discovering cultures far and wide.

Yes, we miss him deeply. But we do not miss the Crocs. They have been ceremonially retired. 😂

Thank you Jon, for everything you gave to Vista Day Surgery and to the people who walk through our doors.

As we head into the festive season, we’d like to share our upcoming holiday closure dates with our community. Vista Day Surgery will close at 3:00 PM on Friday, 19 December 2025, and will reopen on Monday, 5 January 2026.

We’ll be using this period to complete essential year-end preparations and ensure our facilities and team are ready for a strong start to 2026. If you’re planning ahead for appointments or have any queries, we encourage you to get in touch before the break so we can assist promptly.

Associate Professor Richard Mills completed his final operating list last week, bringing to a close a chapter that has shaped generations of ophthalmologists.

Richard’s career has been grounded in science, teaching and patient care. His research into keratoconus, Fuchs’ dystrophy and corneal transplantation has advanced global understanding of these conditions. He was the first surgeon in South Australia to perform DSEK, helping bring modern corneal techniques to local patients.

He has trained surgeons, guided medical students and shared his knowledge with health workers across Australia. His influence will continue through the many people he has taught and inspired.

Pictured with him in the first slide is Dr Stephen Kinnear, his Anaesthetist, who has supported him throughout his surgical journey for the last 26 years!

This year, our Vista team showed their support with pink scrub tops!

Every pink scrub top tells a story of giving, with some sponsored by colleagues and others proudly donated by our doctors. Together, our efforts have raised an impressive contribution for the foundation. 🌸

Last week, our Vista Day Surgery team came together to mark R U OK? Day. In the operating theatres it was “socks in scrubs,” and across the hospital our team wore R U OK? t-shirts — each one a small reminder of the power in simply asking someone how they’re really going.

We also joined in fundraising efforts to support mental health, because care and connection are things we build together as a community, not just for a single day.

Mental health matters every day. Sometimes, the smallest question “Are you OK?” can open the door to hope, to healing, and even save a life. 💛
