I returned from my volunteer work in the Philippines, just before the Cyclone thought it would cause some chaos (no power, internet or phone signal for myself at home - I replied to all enquires but if you didn’t get a reply please reach out as I think there were some ongoing communication issues on the network!)
I just wanted to share some pictures of my experience and thank all those that donated mum and baby clothing, breast pads, breast pumps and baby wraps. They were gratefully received by the new mums and local midwifes.
An international team of doctors, nurses, pharmacists, dentists and midwives spent the week providing care and education to on the island of Ticao island in the Philippines.
We were joined by local student midwives who help provide translation and assisted in our clinics. We were supported by the local police and army, and a whole team of locals who assisted in feeding and transporting us all.
The small team of Midwives provided antenatal and postnatal checks alongside well baby/child checks - seeing nearly 500 children in the week. Each day we were working in a different local school, and would set up a makeshift clinic space.
It was an exhausting week, but such a privilege to be able offer my time to the women and families of Ticao island. I hope to be back in the future.
