LISTENING TO THE BODY INSTEAD OF OVERRIDING IT
January often arrives with noise.
Messages telling us to push harder, be better, fix ourselves, start over.
Plans, goals, resolutions — all pointing outward.
But the body speaks quietly.
Holistic wellness invites us to turn inward instead. Not to control or correct, but to listen.
When We Override the Body
Many of us have been taught, consciously or unconsciously, to override our bodies.
We push through exhaustion.
We ignore tension.
We numb emotions.
We dismiss pain as inconvenience.
This overriding often comes from survival — from needing to cope, keep going, or meet expectations. Over time, however, the body begins to speak louder. Fatigue deepens. Anxiety rises. Emotions surface unexpectedly. The nervous system becomes overwhelmed.
The body is not working against us.
It is communicating.
The Body as an Intelligent Guide
Your body holds immense wisdom.
It remembers what your mind has forgotten.
It stores experiences, emotions, and unmet needs.
It responds honestly — without judgement or agenda.
Tightness may be asking for rest.
Restlessness may be asking for movement.
Emotional waves may be asking to be felt, not fixed.
When we slow down enough to listen, the body often reveals exactly what is needed.
January: A Time for Gentle Awareness
January is not meant to be a sprint.
It is a threshold — a transition between what has been and what is forming. Holistic wellness in this season asks us to soften our approach. Instead of imposing change, we practice awareness.
You might begin by noticing:
• How your body feels upon waking
• Where you hold tension throughout the day
• How your energy rises and falls
• What situations leave you drained or nourished
Listening does not require action straight away. Awareness itself is healing.
The Role of the Nervous System
Much of our overriding comes from a dysregulated nervous system.
When the body remains in a state of stress or vigilance, we lose our ability to hear subtle signals. We become disconnected from sensation and intuition.
Practices such as Reiki, meditation, emotional release techniques, and mindful touch help calm the nervous system. In this state, the body feels safer to communicate — and we feel safer to listen.
This is where true healing begins.
Emotions Live in the Body
Emotions are not just mental experiences. They move through the body as sensation, breath, temperature, and tension.
When emotions are suppressed or ignored, they often lodge themselves in the physical body. Over time, this may show up as chronic pain, fatigue, or a sense of being “stuck.”
Listening to the body allows emotions to surface gently, without force. It creates space for release, integration, and understanding.
A Softer Way Forward
Holistic wellness is not about discipline or control. It is about relationship.
A relationship with your body that is based on trust.
A relationship with your energy that is based on respect.
A relationship with yourself that allows rest, change, and growth.
As you move through January, you might ask:
• What is my body asking for today?
• What happens if I respond with kindness instead of resistance?
• Where can I soften my expectations of myself?
You do not need to do more to be well.
You may simply need to listen.
Closing Reflection
Your body has been with you through every experience, every season, every challenge. It has adapted, protected, and carried you.
This month, allow yourself to meet it with curiosity rather than judgement.
Presence rather than pressure.
Compassion rather than control.
Holistic wellness begins when we stop overriding and start listening.

My Healing Journey

I didn’t always understand my mind or body.
For many years, anxiety, stress and depression felt overwhelming — like something was wrong with me that I couldn’t explain or fix.

What I didn’t realise then was that my sensitivity was actually my intuition, waiting to be understood.

Through meditation and Reiki, I learned to slow down and listen. I began noticing how emotions lived in my body, how energy shifted with touch, breath and stillness, and how deeply healing it felt to be held without judgement.

What once felt like anxiety became information.
What once felt like depression became a call to rest and reconnect.
What once felt like stress became a teacher.

Becoming a natural healer wasn’t a decision — it was a remembering. My own healing opened a path to support others who feel sensitive, overwhelmed or disconnected, just as I once did.

Today, I welcome every experience as part of a growing understanding of energy, intuition and self-compassion.
