🌈 Helping Your Child with Separation Anxiety 💛

Separation anxiety is a very common phase for young children, especially around new things like preschool, kinder or daycare drop‑offs. It’s normal for little ones to feel nervous or upset when they’re away from mum, dad or their main caregiver.

Here are some helpful ways to support your child through it:
👋 Create a predictable goodbye routine
A special wave, a quick cuddle or a short phrase you repeat each time can help your child feel more secure.

📖 Use social stories
Talk about what happens during the day, like who they will see and that you’ll be back using simple pictures or a story.

🧠 Help them understand emotions
Name feelings (“It’s okay to feel nervous”) and offer calming tools like gentle breathing or squeezing a favourite toy.

🕒 Practice short separations
Start small like staying with a trusted caregiver for a short time and build up as they get more comfortable.

🧸 Use a comfort object or charm
A small item from home (a charm, toy or picture) can remind them of you and provide reassurance when you’re apart.

💬 Remember: it’s OK for children to feel worried sometimes and with support, most kids learn to feel confident during separations.
