St Vincent's Private Werribee welcomes students from South Korea

Last week, St Vincent's Private Werribee played host to six physiotherapy students from Daegu Catholic University in South Korea for a two-day observational placement. The students spent time with our allied health team, including physiotherapists and occupational therapists, on both the acute and rehabilitation wards. This provided them with valuable insights into patient care within an Australian healthcare setting.

The students expressed their great appreciation for the opportunity to learn from our dedicated staff and patients, finding the experience both enjoyable and enlightening. This visit was also a wonderful cultural exchange for our team, who valued the chance to engage with the students and share knowledge.

Experiences like this show just how great our community is and our strong commitment to helping others learn and grow.

At St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne, our Emergency Department includes a dedicated Mental Health and Alcohol and Other Drug (MHAOD) Hub - an integrated, specialist-led service providing immediate support to people in crisis.

This collaborative model brings together emergency clinicians, mental health specialists, and AOD teams to offer trauma-informed, person-centred care when it’s needed most. “We see people from all walks of life and treat everyone with respect,” says Emergency Nurse Olivia Bollington. “We listen and involve them in their care.”

The average length of stay for those attending the Hub is 40 per cent shorter than the average length of stay they would have experienced in our ED as part of the general mix of patients.

It’s part of a national St Vincent’s commitment to caring for people experiencing mental health challenges, addiction, and disadvantage - across our hospitals, outreach teams and digital services.

This week marks National Stroke Week, highlighting one of Australia’s leading causes of death and disability – yet over 80% of strokes are preventable.

In June, the team from St Vincent’s Private Hospital Werribee proudly took part in the Wyndham Health Festival, an inspiring new event organised by the Wyndham Health Foundation that shines a spotlight on community health and wellbeing.

We were privileged to have Dr Jay Patel, Specialist and Consultant Physician in Rehabilitation Medicine, represent St Vincent’s Private Hospital Werribee as a keynote speaker. Dr Patel delivered a highly regarded presentation on this vital topic, prompting thoughtful discussion and encouraging strong community participation.

“Stroke can happen to anyone, but with the right knowledge and swift action, outcomes can improve dramatically”

This week is a reminder to:
👉Learn the FAST signs
👉Get your blood pressure checked
👉Support stroke survivors in your life

“Let’s work together to raise awareness and strengthen the circle of care around stroke. Every minute counts. Every life matters”

“I was 49, fit, healthy – and my heart just stopped.”

Sarah thought she was doing everything right – until a sudden cardiac arrest almost took her life. Thanks to her partner’s quick action and the exceptional cardiology team at St Vincent’s, she survived.

But not everyone is as lucky.

Cardiovascular disease remains one of Australia’s biggest killers – and demand for care is rising fast.

With your help, we can fund lifesaving cardiac equipment to detect hidden heart conditions earlier and treat patients faster.

June is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month, the fourth most common type of newly diagnosed cancer and second deadliest in Australia.

Recently, the team from St Vincent’s Private Hospital Werribee proudly participated in the Wyndham Health Festival, an inspiring new initiative organised by the Wyndham Health Foundation that places community health and wellbeing in the spotlight.

We were honoured to have Dr Mohammed Khaleel, General Surgeon & Endoscopist, represent St Vincent’s Private Hospital Werribee as a keynote speaker. Dr Khaleel presented on the important topic of Bowel Cancer Screening, delivering a well-received and engaging session that sparked meaningful discussion and community interaction.

“Bowel Cancer often starts without symptoms, but it doesn’t have to end in tragedy. If you’re aged 45 to 74, a free home test could save your life. Take the test. It’s simple, safe, and effective. Early detection through bowel screening can prevent cancer or catch it early when treatment works best” – Dr Mohammed Khaleel, General Surgeon & Endoscopist

For Meg, nursing brings together her love of people, science, and care, something that runs deep in her family.

“A lot of my family is in healthcare, and I was really inspired by the work they’ve done. I love helping others, and I love how the body works; nursing was the perfect fit.”

At St Vincent’s, Meg has found more than just a workplace.

“Everyone is so friendly and supportive. I come to work with a big smile, and I always leave with one too.”
