Polydactyly!

Polydactyly is a genetic condition which can run in families or due to environmental causes.

Usually this condition is asymptomatic (without pain or other issues) though some people with polydactyly have a concurrent cognitive or developmental syndrome.

Most people won’t experience too many issues with polydactyly with the leading issue being shoe fit… so wide shoes are essential!

Cosmetically, surgery to remove the additional toe as a treatment option.

A moon 🌕 boot 👢 is classified as a gold standard treatment for a number of injuries in the foot and ankle. It comes in many different varieties depending on your injury 🤕 I.e. tendon tears, bone 🦴fractures etc. Its main function is to offload the injured area.

Your podiatrist👩‍⚕️🧑‍⚕️ will typically prescribe you a moon boot to ensure the affected tissue heals correct way in a relatively short time ⏱ frame and most importantly to avoid long-term complications.

It is typically worn for 4-6 weeks, however, It is important to follow the instructions provided by your podiatrist to achieve the best possible outcome.

Wearing a moon boot can feel strange 🤔 at first but and you can expect to walk 🚶 a little different, as the other leg/foot 🦶 will be taking on most of the pressure.

Once adequate healing has been reached, your podiatrist may recommend other supportive devices I.e. orthotics and footwear 👟.

Pitted Keratolysis

Pitted Keratolysis is a bacterial skin infection that affects the soles 👣 of the feet. It looks like lots of little dimples in the skin- just like a golf ball 🏌️‍♂️has.

This is caused by a bacterial infection - often associated with sweaty feet 💧- hyperhidrosis.

To treat 👩‍⚕️🧑‍⚕️this condition effectively it is important to address the underlying causes. This can involved addressing sweaty feet 💦 and improving hygiene 🛀. Choosing natural material socks 🧦, drying feet well, shoes that are breathable! 👟

Once this is achieved generally over the counter topical solutions 🧴 can be used to treat this condition. Sometimes it may require soaks 🛀 in different solutions 🧪or oral medication.

If you suffer from Pitted Keraroylysis or any other foot-related issues, come see the team at Practical Podiatry 🧑‍⚕️👩‍⚕️so we can address all your quarries and concerns. See more details @ http://www.practical-podiatry.com.au

Interdigital corns 👣🧦

Interdigital corns are painful 🤕 growths found on the inner aspects of the toes 🦶.

Corns grow as a result of friction, pressure and excess moisture 💧. They can also form as a result of pressure on the bony 🦴 growths of the toe itself.

Treatment involves debriding the corn which will provide relief, but we want to ensure it doesn’t grow back or grow back too quickly.

To do this we need to address the causative factors- ensuring shoes👟 are wide enough for the feet, wearing natural fibre socks🧦 and drying well between your toes. It may also be beneficial to use interdigital wedges, toe spaces👣 or toes sleeves.

In very severe causes have a minor procedure to remove the bony 🦴 prominences can be performed.

If you suffer from interdigital corns or any other foot related issues contact the team 👩‍⚕️🧑‍⚕️ at Practical Podiatry and book your appointment now to ensure your foot health! See more details @ http://www.practical-podiatry.com.au

Hyperhidrosis

Hyperhidrosis is abnormally excessive sweating 😥that's not necessarily related to heat 🔥 or exercise 🏃

Causes:
Primary hyperhidrosis appears to be due to overactivity of a certain part of the brain 🧠, this overactivity is transmitted via the nervous system to the sweat 💧 gland causing excess sweat 😅.

Secondary hyperhidrosis occurs when excess sweating 💧 is due to a medical condition. (diabetes, menopause, thyroid cancer, spine/nerve problems)

What is presents like:
Increased moisture 💦 on feet that 🦶 may often have an unpleasant oder. Maceration between toes 👣and under soles, recurring tinea infections are common also common.

Simple Treatment suggestions:
Drying feet well, breathable socks 🧦 (bamboo, cotton), suitable shoes - leather or mesh that breaths 👟, alcohol based sprays or antiperspirant treatments.

Further Treatment:
Botox injections 💉, iontophoresis and surgery 🏥could all be suggested by specialists 👩‍⚕️🧑‍⚕️if the presentation permits.

Come visit the team at Practical Podiatry 🧑‍⚕️👩‍⚕️ if you think you may suffer from Hyperhidrosis or any other foot related conditions! 👣 See more details @

PVD: Peripheral Vascular Disease

PVD is a condition where there is a reduction in blood 🩸supply down to the legs 🦵 and feet 🦶. Our body needs blood supply to allow for the health of the cells and the tissue it services- skin, nail, toe etc.

This can be caused by: Smoking 🚬, Diabetes-higher sugar 🍭levels, High Blood Pressure - if this is not controlled, Genetic Factors 🧬, Trauma and Lifestyle factors.

Symptoms include: Pain/cramping 🤕 whilst walking 🚶‍♀️ most commonly in the calf muscles- 🦵this pain normally occurs after a set distance say 50m-100m (intermittent claudication), night pain 🌙 in calf muscles or feet pain whilst walking up stairs or a hill. There may also be changes in colour to the skin- a reddish 🔴 pink colour or a more pale colour. The feet may also be quite cold ❄️ to touch.

Upon your visit to the podiatrist 👩‍⚕️🧑‍⚕️they will perform a number of tests to assess this including a doppler ultrasound of the arteries of the feet. This gives us information to determine if there is adequate blood flow.

To help with circulation down to the feet there is a few things that can be done to help. Reduce the causative factors such as reducing smoking 🚬and lowering the blood pressure 🩸/ sugar levels 🍭.

Walking and exercise 🚶🏃‍♀️is a very easy way to help! The more you do the less likely you are to experience problems. You can also come visit the team at Practical Podiatry to seek further help, see more details @ http://www.practical-podiatry.com.au
