💙 Say Hello to 13SICK: Australia’s Free After-Hours Medical Service
Let’s face it—getting sick outside regular GP hours can be stressful. Whether it’s a child with a fever at midnight, a Sunday morning stomach bug, or needing a medical certificate when your regular clinic is closed, many Aussies don’t know where to turn.

But thankfully, there’s an amazing service helping Australians get the care they need, right when they need it—without the out-of-pocket cost. It's called 13SICK.

🏥 What is 13SICK?
13SICK (National Home Doctor) is Australia’s largest bulk-billed, after-hours medical service—offering support via both telehealth and home visits when your usual GP is closed. If you’re eligible, you don’t pay a cent. They bill Medicare directly.

They’ve delivered over 10 million consultations, and are trusted by over 4,000 GP clinics across the country. It's fast, it's easy, and it's keeping Aussies out of emergency departments for non-urgent issues.

⏰ When Can You Use 13SICK?
You can access a 13SICK doctor during:

Weeknights from 6pm to 8am

Saturdays before 8am or after 12pm

All day Sundays and public holidays

Whether you need a video call, phone consult, or even a doctor to visit your home, 13SICK is ready to help.

💡 What Can They Help With?
13SICK is perfect for urgent, non-life-threatening medical issues like:

Cold & flu symptoms, fevers, sore throats

COVID and respiratory illnesses

Urinary tract infections

Mental health concerns

Rashes, minor injuries, or skin infections

Gastro symptoms

Prescription refills and medical certificates (if appropriate)

Doctors will always assess the situation to ensure they can safely treat you via telehealth or home visit—or let you know if emergency care is more appropriate.

🏡 Prefer to Stay at Home? You Can!
If eligible and appropriate, a doctor can even come to your home for an in-person visit. This is a game-changer for families with kids, older adults, people with disability or chronic illness, or those without transport.

🧾 Who Can Access Bulk-Billing?
To access the no-cost (bulk-billed) service, you’ll need:

A valid Medicare or Gold DVA card, and

To have visited one of their subscribed GP clinics in the last 12 months,

Or fall into an exemption category (like First Nations patients, COVID isolation, sexual or mental health-related consults, etc.)

If you’re not eligible for bulk-billing, you may still access the service for a small fee.

🌱 Why It Matters
13SICK is a lifesaver—literally and figuratively—for so many Australians. It helps keep pressure off our busy hospitals, supports people living remotely or alone, and ensures that access to care isn’t restricted by time, mobility, or cost.

It’s accessible, kind, and compassionate healthcare delivered right to your screen or front door.

🔄 What is a Replacement Support Form — and Do You Need One?
Navigating the NDIS can be tricky, especially when you're looking to get something a little outside the box. That’s where a Replacement Support Form comes in.

This form is used when you want to purchase an item that isn't typically funded by the NDIS, but could serve as a replacement for a support already included in your plan. It’s a way to request approval to use your current NDIS budget differently — as long as the new item meets your disability-related needs and delivers the same or better outcomes.

🧩 When Might You Need a Replacement Support Form?
You may want to submit one if:

You're replacing a support with something more suitable or empowering.
Example: Replacing a support worker’s assistance for reminders with a smart device that lets you manage independently.

You’re hoping to purchase something from the NDIS "Out List" (items not usually funded).
Certain household appliances, smart tech, or personal devices may be considered if they meet strict criteria.

📦 What Kind of Items Can Be Considered?
These are some examples that the NDIS may consider under a Replacement Support application:

Standard household items (e.g., washing machines, dishwashers)

Smartwatches

Tablets or smartphones

Apps for communication, scheduling, or accessibility

To be considered, the item must:

Replace an existing NDIS-funded support in your plan

Cost the same or less than the support it’s replacing

Deliver equal or better outcomes for your disability support needs

We now offer a streamlined Replacement Support Application service (for even people who we don't support at GYA) – where we do the form for you, gather the necessary evidence, and ensure it's NDIS-ready.

Understanding the NDIS “In” and “Out” Lists: What You Need to Know
Making sense of the new rules and how they affect your plan

In late 2024, the NDIS introduced two new reference lists that have since changed how participants can use their funding. These lists—commonly called the “In” and “Out” lists—were designed to bring more clarity around what is and isn’t considered a reasonable and necessary support under the Scheme.

But with clarity came confusion, especially as participants and providers try to adjust. With the transition period set to finish on 3 October 2025, it’s important to understand how these lists work and what they mean for your NDIS journey.

🔍 Quick Refresher: What are the In and Out Lists?
The “In” List includes supports that are eligible to be funded under the NDIS.

The “Out” List outlines supports that are not considered reasonable and necessary—even if they help you in some way.

If a support is on the Out List, it won’t be funded, regardless of whether it relates to your disability.

🚫 Examples of What’s Not Funded (Out List)
Here are some commonly excluded items:

Everyday items like groceries, cleaning products, or drinks

Household goods such as recliners, washing machines, or garden tools

Sports memberships, uniforms, or venue hire

Therapies without strong evidence

Services that are the responsibility of health, education, or community sectors

General supports that are typical for all children and not specific to a disability

⚠️ There are some exceptions where certain items may be funded as “replacement supports,” but this must be approved before purchasing.

🤔 Common Confusion Points
Some items seem like they should be covered but usually aren’t unless strong justification is provided:

Gym memberships or equipment – must be clearly linked to your disability goals and backed by evidence

Smart home tech (e.g. Alexa, Google Home) – only in specific circumstances

Tablets or laptops – generally only if they support communication or therapy needs

Baby items – considered standard parenting expenses

Gaming consoles or recreational tech – not funded unless part of an approved support plan

✅ How to Check If Something Is Funded
Ask yourself:

Is the support on the In List?

Is it not on the Out List?

Is it clearly connected to your disability and goals?

Is it not funded by another system (like Medicare or schools)?

Is it aligned with your NDIS plan and budget?

Still unsure? Chat to your Support Coordinator, Plan Manager, LAC, or call the NDIS. It’s better to check than to get stuck with a bill.

📌 Understanding Impairment Categories
All new or reassessed plans now link your disability to one (or more) of six impairment categories. This category determines the types of supports you can access. If you live with more than one disability, make sure you know which one(s) your plan is based on.

Note: This may not apply to plans issued before 3 October 2024.

🤝 A Word on Providers
Many providers are still catching up on these changes. If they provide a support that’s on the Out List, they may not get paid—and you could be liable. It’s okay to ask questions or request clarification before agreeing to services.

🛑 What If You Make a Mistake?
Until 3 October 2025, the NDIA is focusing on education rather than punishment:

Under $1,500: No repayment for the first two unintentional errors

Over $1,500: A debt may be raised, but can be waived in some cases

However, if it’s intentional, repeated, or happens after the transition ends, the NDIS may:

Ask you to repay the funds

Shorten your plan or change how it’s managed

Refuse to pay the provider

All participant debts must be reviewed and approved by the NDIA CEO.

💡 Plan managers were only given one month to comply with the new rules—so they may now be held responsible if they pay for ineligible items.

🔄 What About Replacements?
Just because something was funded in the past doesn’t mean it will be replaced now. For example, tech like headphones or tablets bought during COVID may only be replaced if:

They’re still essential to your therapy or communication

They were previously approved

They fit within the new NDIS guidelines

🐋 Whale Watching Magic – A Day to Remember

5th July – Community Group Outing

On Friday the 5th of July, we set out on a crisp winter afternoon for a breathtaking whale watching adventure just off the coast near Sea World. With excitement in the air and warm jackets zipped up tight, we boarded the boat together – a beautiful mix of participants, support workers, and community members all ready to witness nature’s wonders.

And nature did not disappoint.

Shortly after heading out, we were greeted by the magnificent sight of humpback whales breaching and tail-slapping in the wild. The ocean sparkled in the sunlight as these gentle giants gave us an unforgettable show – leaping, playing, and even cruising close to the boat. For many, it was their first time seeing whales up close, and the expressions of joy, awe, and pure wonder were priceless.

This wasn’t just about watching whales – it was about connection, community, and creating memories together. For some, it was a rare opportunity to access an experience that might otherwise be out of reach. For others, it was a peaceful moment in the open air, surrounded by supportive people and the soothing rhythm of the sea.

A huge thank you to everyone who made the day so special – from the participants who braved the early start, to the support workers who made sure everyone felt safe and included, and to the crew who helped us spot each splash and fin.

We’re already planning the next adventure – so if you missed this one, don’t worry! Stay tuned for future social group events, and as always, reach out if you have an idea or request for our next outing.

Until then, may your days be filled with calm seas and occasional tail slaps. 💙

🧍 Participant Check-In & Safeguarding Framework
The NDIA has ramped up check-ins for participants at risk (e.g., psychosocial disability, living alone, limited informal supports). These are proactive wellbeing calls from LACs or NDIA staff.

They’ll ask:

Are your supports working?

Do you feel safe?

Are you achieving your goals?

🎯 If you're a provider:

Be prepared for participants to raise concerns or seek help after a check-in

Keep your documentation strong

Help participants understand these calls are for their safety, not to take supports away

⚖️ Conflict of Interest – Stricter Guidance
NDIS is cracking down on actual and perceived conflicts of interest. All providers (including support coordinators and recovery coaches) are expected to:

Declare and document any conflict

Offer 2–3 genuine alternative providers

Avoid role crossovers (e.g., being both support coordinator and support worker for the same client)

Raise concerns if you see other providers coercing or limiting choice

🌟 Meet Rosie from Bright Sign – Wellbeing & Empowerment Solutions
Empowering the Deaf Community through Language, Connection & Confidence

We’re excited to introduce you to Rosie — founder of Bright Sign – Wellbeing & Empowerment Solutions, a heartfelt initiative built to create real change for the Deaf community.

Rosie is a CODA (Child of Deaf Adults) who has grown up deeply connected to the Deaf community. Through her personal and professional experiences, she’s seen firsthand the barriers many people face when it comes to access, communication, and inclusion — and she’s on a mission to change that.

“My parents and the clients I work with are fed up with the lack of support and services available. That’s why I created Bright Sign – to offer something real, respectful, and empowering.”

At Bright Sign, Rosie offers a variety of day programs delivered in Auslan, designed to support individuals in gaining:

New skills

Increased confidence

Meaningful social connections

These programs aren’t just activities — they’re a way for people to connect in their own language, feel understood, and build community in a space that celebrates who they are.

Rosie is passionate about helping people advocate for themselves and live more fulfilling lives — and it shows in every aspect of her work.

When she’s not busy running Bright Sign, Rosie is a devoted wife and mum of two, who loves spending time outdoors riding her horse or bike, walking her dog on the beach, playing soccer, and getting creative. She also has a keen interest in wellbeing, arts and crafts, and animal care — which often inspire her programs and offerings.

If you're looking for culturally safe, language-affirming programs that centre empowerment and connection, Bright Sign might be just what you're after.

Fighting for what’s fair 💬

This week, we supported a Deaf participant who had interpreter hours cut — despite needing full access to medical and mental health care. We lodged a Change of Circumstances and a formal complaint. 📝

Access is a right, not a luxury.

We’re proud to stand beside our participants when the system needs a push. If you’re unsure about your rights under NDIS, reach out. You don’t have to do this alone.
