About me:
My name is Vivienne Barton and I have lived in the Busselton community for 28 years having trained as a Registered Nurse in the UK in 1982. I possess post graduate qualifications in Counselling, Child and Adolescent Health and a Masters Degree in Nursing – Nurse Practitioner. For the last 16 years I have been locally working as a School Nurse. During this time, I have developed a passion for working with young people and their families. As a result I completed my Masters degree last year and set up the first community based Nurse Practitioner Service in Busselton. My focus in my practice is helping young people to be as healthy as possible, so that they can grow and learn and achieve optimal wellbeing. I do this by one on one mentoring and counselling with a young person, addressing physical, emotional and social health needs that may be impacting their wellbeing and supporting families with the challenges of parenting youth. I work and liaise with other agencies in Busselton in order to support the young person and their family further. I work in a culturally sensitive manner and has an interest and experience working in Indigenous health. Other areas of interest are sexual health, gender diversity, eating disorders, mental illness, trauma and neurodevelopmental disorders. I see young people aged 15-24. For their wellbeing, where I consider there is a risk of harm to a person under 18 years of age, I will make contact with the parent or carer. About Nurse Practitioners:
Nurse Practitioners as a profession are in an important part of a modern integrated health care system. They have practiced in Australia for 21+ years and provide health care in all states and territories in Australia. A Nurse Practitioner (NP) is a Registered Nurse with the experience, expertise and authority to diagnose and treat people of all ages with a variety of acute or chronic health conditions. NPs have completed additional university study at Master’s degree level and are the most senior and independent clinical nurses in our health care system. The title "Nurse Practitioner" can only be used by a person who has been endorsed by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.
