Queensland Nurses and Midwives' Union

Queensland Nurses and Midwives' Union Authorised by S. Beaman, Secretary, Queensland Nurses and Midwives’ Union, West End, 4101. Membership of the QNMU also provides for full membership of the ANMF.

The Queensland Nurses and Midwives' Union (QNMU) is the peak industrial and professional organisation for nurses and midwives working in public and private health and aged care in Queensland. The QNMU seeks to promote and defend the industrial, professional, social, political and democratic interests of more than 70,000 members. Members include:

Registered nurses
Midwives
Enrolled nurses
Assistants in nursing (however titled)
Students
Anyone who undertakes nursing work

There is no other organisation in Queensland which provides comprehensive representation for nurses and midwives as both employees and professionals. The QNMU is a state-registered union and a branch of the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation (ANMF), which has branches in each state and territory, which means the Union is also active in promoting the interests of nurses and midwives on a national and international level. Members have the opportunity to be actively involved in the QNMU and decide our priorities through the Union’s democratic structure. Ultimately, it’s these priorities and policies which help influence and shape the practice of nursing and midwifery in Queensland. Nurses and midwives, through the QNMU, have a long and proud history of working together to achieve improvements to working conditions, to the profession and, through the broader union movement, to the lives of all Australians. Nurses and midwives continue to work together and pool their combined resources and knowledge to protect and further the common interests of all members. Find out more at www.qnmu.org.au

The QNMU encourages and supports online dialogue on our social media forums, and we encourage members and users to be familiar with our social media terms of use at www.qnmu.org.au/SocialMediaTOU

Mater own 20 private Queensland facilities that treat a total of around 700,000 private and public patients state-wide each year.

However, Mater nurses and midwives are currently paid less than their Queensland Health (QH) colleagues.

They also receive reduced conditions and less overtime, penalty rates, allowances and paid parental and professional development leave than QH nurses and midwives. Under Mater’s current Enterprise Agreement offer, around 5000 Queensland nurses and midwives would receive less pay and entitlements than those employed with Queensland Health.

This includes zero paid reproductive leave compared to the ten days available in the public health system.
