If you did not make it to the Bunya nut festival at the Narara Ecovillage have a read on what you (and I) missed. Pretty powerful stuff! Hope to get to it next year! Please share also.

John Seed organised the event, invited Deb Swan to share her masters on Bunya Tukka Tracks and Tim Selwyn of Girri Girra Tours to do some yarning. Villagers had gathered, harvested, lopped and cooked so guests could eat AND ... help harvest, lop and watch flour being made.

John's reflection:

Before anything else, pause.

Feel Earth beneath your feet.

The bunya pine has been here for 200 million years. Before humans. Before kangaroos. Before eucalypts. It endured ice ages, extinctions, continents tearing apart. Dinosaurs once swallowed bunya cones whole.

Deep time stares back at us through these trees.

From a deep ecology perspective, this matters.

Because deep ecology begins with a radical shift:
humans are not the centre of the world.
We are participants in a far older, wider, more-than-human community.

The bunya is not a resource.
Not a crop.
Not a symbol.

It is a being with its own evolutionary genius.

For at least 60,000 years, First Nations cultures understood this. When the bunya cones swelled, word travelled along songlines. Smoke signals called people across vast distances. And during bunya season, war stopped.

Hostilities were suspended.

Why?

Because the bunya mattered more than conflict.
Because ecological law was stronger than grievance.
Because the gathering was central to life.

These were not “festivals” in the modern sense. They were parliaments, trade fairs, marriage congresses, universities and ceremonial renewals of law. Trees were held as family relations — not property, but responsibility.

And then, within a few violent decades, it was smashed. Access blocked. Trees felled. Law ignored. A relationship tens of thousands of years old severed.

From a deep ecology perspective, this was ecological amputation.

Today, at Narara, we are not reenacting the past. We are not pretending continuity we do not have. We are choosing orientation.

We are aligning, humbly, with an ancient songline.

The bunya gathering is older than the pyramids. Older than Stonehenge. Older than the Vedas.

What does it invite of us now?

To extend our sense of self beyond the human.
To include trees, waters, soils, ancestors and descendants.
To make decisions today that will still make sense 60,000 years from now.

May future people say:
“That was when remembering began again.”

If this reflection speaks to you, I invite you to share it — and to comment:

What would it mean for you to live as participant, not master, in the wider community of life?

Thanks Tanya Mottl for sharing!

Congrats on forming a new comittee and keeping the centre open! It is so great when community comes together! Well done to Jan and Annette who had the tough job of managing things when Central Coast Council passed over the reins and post COVID times. Looks like the centre s in good hands, run by the community for the community! Looking forward to helping out where I can to keep the centre thriving!

VOLUNTEER CALL OUT FOR Gosford 50+ Centre
Gosford Over 50’s Leisure and Learning Centre is a safe and supportive place to meet like-minded people. Tucked up the back of Gosford’s busy city centre, it is a hop skip and a jump up the hill on Albany Street with the backdrop of the beautiful Rumbalara Reserve bushlands.

Gosford Over 50’s Leisure and Learning Centre is a non-profit organisation run purely by a team of volunteers. The volunteers are dedicated individuals who selflessly devote their time and effort to create a warm and welcoming environment for all visitors. They are passionate about providing engaging activities and opportunities for socializing including a café where you can share a meal, an op-shop to bag a bargain, and a veggie garden plot to connect with nature and learn how to grow food.

The centre also offers a range of activities by it’s members and private hirers:

For the (wannabe) active: Tai chi and Qui Gong, Active and Healthy exercise group, Sitting Chair exercises, Indoor bowls, Table tennis, Darts,

For the Dancer: Dance with Jan, Line Dancing, Zumba Gold, Central Coast United Physie and Dance, Central Coast Leagues Club Dance. Blue Suede Shoes, Shall We Dance

Gosford Over 50’s Leisure and Learning Centre are currently seeking volunteers for most of the committee positions as well as other volunteer roles. Perhaps you have experience that could benefit the community centre as well, such as carpentry, painting, webpage experience, marketing, social media, newsletter writing or grant applications. They would love to hear from you.

The Committee consists of the following positions:
• President
• Vice President
• Secretary
• Treasurer
• Volunteer Coordinator
• Events Coordinator
• Maintenance Office

A more detailed list of responsibilities is available at reception.

The Annual General Meeting is on Tuesday 24th February at 9:30am and Nominations for all Committee positions with completed Nominations are due by 4pm Friday 13 February 2026.

It's a wonderful opportunity to give back to the community and make a difference in people’s lives.

HAS 'THE KIDS's SPECIAL' CAUGHT ON YET?
Summer can ba a time where sugary drink intake can increase. High sugar containing drinks, including fruit juice, can impact a child's appetite in 2 different ways:
1. Impact how willing they are to try and eat the nutritious foods you want them to eat, such as veggies OR
2. Train their tummies to overeat by losing their natural hunger-satiety regulation

When you are out and about you can ask for a 'Kids Special' a splash of juice with sodawater - Let's make it a thing!

Tag a restaurant who accomodates for this request.

Happy Birthday Food Integrity Group Co-op Ltd - FIG !
Local organic produce +volunteer run =community connection, it can't get better than that!

Happy Birthday…. to us!! 🥳🥳

FIG started 17 years ago today as a non-profit organisation aiming to be a vital hub where members of the local community could connect with locally sourced organic fruit and vegetables, other items such as eggs, bread, dry goods and member’s surplus home-grown produce.

17 years later we’re a thriving hub where our community can get all that and more every single week.

Thank you to everyone who has supported FIG over the years: the members, volunteers, farmers, board members, delivery drivers, families and the Razorbacks Rugby Club who support us with a great home. We love you all!

REASEARCH ROUNDUP
Interesting read, but no surprise, one method does not work for everyone! I have learnt that managing calories in and calories out is not necessarily helpful in my 20 years experience of working with people and their eating habits.

So many factors impact fat and muscle changes like sleep, weight bearing and cardio exercise, sedentary activity/screen time, portion control and meal timings around activity levels, eating breakfast soon after waking and not eating too much prior to bed, mindful eating and being in tune with one's natural hunger signals.

If you need individualised support with your eating, please get in touch for a clinic appointment Central Coast Family Psychology . I would be happy to help!

Intermittent fasting has become a popular phrase in dieting, promising health benefits including kickstarting metabolism and helping shed body fat, but a major review suggests the diets may be over-hyped.
