Thriving kids is coming. Thanks Coastwide Therapy Services for this summary. Not sure why NGOs are more equipped than private practise. Most if us in private practise in the disability space are here because of lack of jobs available in the other sectors. Is health going to create a heck of a lot more jobs for those families? We in private practise have the skills and experience too. It is also frustrating that my NDIS reports recommending dietetic supports and even nuitrition supplements for people at risk of malnourishment have been declined. Working in the disability sector is hard enough without all the extra red tape and feeling like your professional work, skills and expertise is not valued.

THE ROOT CAUSE

As a Paediatric Dietitian who knows how important nutrition is to school life, I want to share this fabulous opportunity I believe all schools should take to improve well-being, learning, behaviour, and resilience amongst kids.

By proactively promoting wholesome food at school we can enhance educational outcomes, reduce teacher stress, and contribute to protecting the planet/ caring for Country. WIN WIN WIN WIN!

🍎The Root Cause partners with schools to help whole school communities make friends with a wide variety of foods, making our jobs as parents and teachers much easier. The results they achieve are life-changing for children, their families, and schools.

✅ Their interactive Mad Food Science Incursion and innovative whole school wellbeing partnership, Making Friends with Food by The Root Cause®, are well-known for sparking non-judgemental and fun conversations about food and its impacts on wellbeing and the environment.

The Mad Food Science Incursion aligns with the Australian Curriculum and has reached over 65,000 students in 290 schools. Over the past four years, more than 90 schools have partnered with The Root Cause to Make Friends with Food. Making Friends with Food is a tried and tested, evidence-based, and award-winning whole school wellbeing partnership that uses food literacy as an improvement tool in schools.

You can contact Suzanne directly via suzanne.burke@therootcause.com.au to enquire about getting them at your school.

Happy Volunteers Week!
Let's celebrate all those volunteers doing so many hours each year.

Since finishing uni I have often volunteered, firstly Dietitians Australia and then for various eco-friendly groups. Now, I volunteer for Narara Ecovillage Pantry, Permaculture Central Coast Inc. and this year helping to organise the Coast Edible Garden Trail
I also have to thank the amazing volunteers at Gosford 50+ Leisure and Learning Centre where I teach Zumba With Carin and Roundabout Circus who have a lot of volunteers for all their fun-raising to make circus possible and inclusive for all!

If you have not volunteered before, consider getting involved in something you are passionate about. It is a great way to build community around you, especially if you are new to an area.

Also with the current petrol prices impacting our food, the more help our community can have to build a local, affordable and resiliant food system the better!

On budget night the Australian Government released its response to the to the Federal Parliamentary Inquiry into Diabetes.

Disappointingly, their response failed to action the strong, evidence-based policies to prevent type 2 diabetes, that were recommended in the report, including:

- A levy on sugary drinks to encourage manufacturers to reduce sugar in their drinks
- Regulating unhealthy food marketing to protect children on TV, online and gaming
- Improved food labelling targeting added sugar

The government has ‘noted’ these recommendations, but has not accepted them, despite them having significant support from public health experts and the Australian community.

This was a missed opportunity from government to prevent chronic diseases linked to poor diet and obesity – covering not just type 2 diabetes but heart disease, cancer, stroke and dementia.

With millions of Australians suffering from serious health issues caused by unhealthy food environments government leadership is urgently needed to help make it easier for Australians to eat nutritious diets.

The Food for Health Alliance urges government to take strong action to prevent chronic disease and protect Australians health now and into the future.
