Vasectomy
What is a Vasectomy?
Vasectomy is a procedure to render you permanently sterile and you will no longer be able to father children.
It is the most reliable form of contraception once the “all clear” has been given

How is it done?
The procedure is performed by Dr Terrina Dickson using a minimally invasive technique.
Dr Dickson has undertaken over 10,000 vasectomies and has a high success and low complication rate.
The tube (vas deferens) is divided and tied to prevent the s***m travelling from the te**es to the p***s for ej*******on. The procedure is carried out under a local anaesthetic for most patients, but there is an option to have the procedure done under sedation.
The procedure takes 15 – 20 minutes and you will have one small wound which is closed with a single dissolvable stitch.

What happens before the procedure?
All patients require to be counselled before a vasectomy procedure. This usually takes place at least 7 days before the procedure and can be done at a face-to-face appointment or during a phone consultation. During this the procedure is explained, the risks and benefits are discussed, and the post op care explained and there is an opportunity for any questions.

What happens on the day of the procedure?
You will arrive at the clinic 15 minutes before the operation. You will be met by our friendly staff and a few pre op checks will be carried out. The procedure itself takes 15 – 20 minutes and after the procedure you will have a cup of tea and biscuits while running through the post op advice.
We do recommend you are collected following your procedure as driving is not recommended.

What happens after the procedure?
You will be given advice on self-care following the procedure and a contact number for any questions or queries.
Roughly 12 weeks after the procedure you will need to send in a sample to confirm the procedure has been successful, and once this result has been received and is all clear you can then stop using alternative forms of contraception.

What are the side effects/risks?
Vasectomy DOES NOT cause impotence or affect your sexual function.
Vasectomy does not increase your risk of prostate or testicular cancer and is not believed to increase your risk of serious disease.
For most men there are no significant problems after vasectomy
There may be a small amount of bruising to the skin and a little localised discomfort which usually settles with simple pain relief, rest, and supportive underwear.
Occasionally there may be some bleeding into the sc***um – a haematoma – this can settle spontaneously or may need surgical drainage
S***m granulomas can occur as s***m can leak from the closed ends of the vas. This can be a tender lump but generally settles with anti-inflammatory pain killers.
Post op infection is uncommon, however if any redness or swelling occurs it is important to seek advice.
Chronic Scrotal Pain is a recognised complication following vasectomy, rates of occurrence vary, and its cause is not fully understood but can be difficult to treat.

How much time off do I need?
Desk Jobs: 2 - 3 days
Manual/Physical Jobs: 1 -2 weeks

When can I exercise?
We recommend you rest for 48 – 72 hours after the procedure . You can gradually reintroduce exercise after this but avoiding running or cycling for two weeks

When can I have S*x?
You can resume sexual in*******se as soon as you feel comfortable , though we would probably recommend waiting at least 48 hours.
