Today we warmly said goodbye to our incredible Adult Respiratory Specialist, Dr Alice Crawford.

Dr Crawford has supported so many Western Australians living with respiratory conditions, helping not only patients but also their families, friends and carers. Her dedication and kindness have made a real difference in our community.

We are truly grateful for the impact she has made during her time at Respiratory Care WA.

We wish her all the best as she continues her research journey, and we look forward to seeing the difference her future work will bring to respiratory health.

We’re thrilled to share that Respiratory Care WA now has a permanent clinic at Cockburn Integrated Health in Success!

This means more clinic days and increased access to vital lung testing and support services for both kids and adults in Perth’s southern suburbs.

A huge thank you to the WA Department of Health, Telethon7 Perth, and Cockburn Integrated Health for making this new space for respiratory care possible. 💙

Imagine a world where no one is held back by their asthma.

Asthma affects 2.8 million Australians. One flare-up can stop life in its tracks.

Our CEO, Rael Rivers, joined the country’s leaders in respiratory health at the 2025 CURE Asthma Symposium to explore new science, technologies, and findings with the potential to CURE ASTHMA.

“As someone who lives with asthma and has family members with the condition, I know how quickly life can be disrupted by a single flare-up. A cure for asthma would transform lives in profound ways.” — Rael Rivers, CEO.

What would life look like if there was no asthma? We’re excited to find out.

Thank you to Asthma Australia, The University of Melbourne and all symposium supporters for driving these vital conversations. Together, we’re working toward a future where asthma no longer shapes the lives of millions.

Landmarks shine bright for COPD awareness 🧡🫁
Throughout November, iconic landmarks across Western Australia have been glowing orange to help shine a light on Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, a condition that affects around 638,000 Australians.

COPD is an umbrella term for chronic lung diseases including emphysema and chronic bronchitis. These conditions cause the airways to narrow, which makes breathing more difficult.

COPD usually develops after long-term exposure to lung irritants such as cigarette smoke, chemical vapours or dusts.

A heartfelt thank you to the landmarks that showed their support, including:

• The Bell Tower Home of the Swan Bells Perth
• The Public Transport Authority (Transperth) for lighting up Perth Station
• The City of Rockingham – Local Government for lighting the Rockingham Foreshore
• Main Roads Western Australia for illuminating Matagarup Bridge, the North Bridge Tunnel and other bridges

Did you take a photo of the landmarks? 📸

Exciting news!

Thanks to the support of the WA Department of Health and Telethon7 Perth, Respiratory Care WA now has two new lung function testing machines that make it easier and quicker to check how well someone’s lungs are performing.

Our new mobile trolleys, supported by PEACH - Personnel Employed at Alcoa Charity Help, will also enable us to move this equipment between clinics and deliver care more flexibly.

Short of Breath, Think COPD 🫁

Today on World COPD Day, we’re sharing Geoffrey’s story.

Geoffrey (73), a proud Noongar man, has lived with asthma since childhood and now manages emphysema — a chronic lung condition that makes breathing challenging.

When he was first diagnosed, Geoffrey didn’t know what emphysema was or how to manage it.

“There’ve been times when I’ve really struggled,” he shares.

With culturally safe support from Arche Health Limited and Respiratory Care WA, Geoffrey has learned new ways to manage his breathing, stay active, and regain confidence in his daily life.

💬 “Don’t give up — keep pushing for the right diagnosis, and know that support is always out there.” – Geoffrey

We were so pleased to welcome Lion Mick Wainwright Chair of the Lions Festival for Disadvantaged Children (WA) Inc (LFFDC) to our West Perth Clinic yesterday! 💙

For 20 years, the Lions Club has stood alongside Respiratory Care WA, generously donating over $100,000 to support children and families affected by asthma and other respiratory conditions.

This year, they’ve contributed another $5,000, helping us continue providing vital care and support to little ones living with respiratory illness.

“Our partnership with Respiratory Care WA reflects what Lions Clubs stand for: service, compassion, and community impact. Together, we’re building a brighter, healthier future for children and families across Western Australia.” - Mr Wainwright

Thank you, Lions Club, for everything you do for our community and for helping WA kids breathe easier. 💛🦁💙

Feeling short of breath after exercise is normal — but if you or someone you love with COPD becomes breathless doing everyday tasks like getting dressed or hanging the washing, it’s time to speak with your health professional.

Early support can make a real difference. They can adjust your treatment, check your inhaler technique, or refer you to a pulmonary rehab program to help you breathe easier and live well.

When breathless, remember the three P’s:
🧘‍♀️ Pause – stop and rest
💺 Position – lean forward, drop your shoulders
💨 Purse your lips – ‘smell the roses, blow out the candles’

If symptoms worsen, follow your COPD Action Plan or call 000 in an emergency.

Have you seen the story about our new clinic for children under six in The West Australian ?💙

A huge thank you to little Greyson and his mum, Kirah, for sharing their story and helping raise awareness of our services and children’s respiratory health, and to Dr James Gibbons, who leads these clinics and supports families with their little ones’ breathing concerns.

If your child or someone you know could benefit from this service, please talk to your GP about a referral to Respiratory Care WA.

🧡 World COPD Day is on the 19 November.

Around 63,000 Australians (1 in 20 aged 45+) live with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)—a serious but often underdiagnosed condition.

Symptoms like breathlessness, chronic cough, or frequent chest infections are often mistaken for ageing, delaying diagnosis.

This World COPD Day, the message is clear:
“Short of Breath, Think COPD.”

Early diagnosis can help people stay active, healthy, and independent.

Bingo night for a good cause! 🎱💙

Equipped with dot markers, bingo books and plenty of snacks, our team, joined by Respiratory Care WA alum and bingo-loving legend Sarah McKenna, had an amazing time at Cannington Bingo last night.

A huge thank you to Sue and the team at Mal Atwell Billiards and Bingo, who host Perth’s biggest bingo nights every Monday and Friday.

They’ve supported Respiratory Care WA for many years, donating thousands of dollars to help us provide free services across WA. These funds make a real difference for people living with asthma, COPD and other respiratory conditions.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who makes nights like this possible! 💙
