Families in the Great Southern recently had the chance to access specialist children’s respiratory care close to home through our first pop-up children’s clinic in Albany.

Supported by Telethon7 Perth, the clinic offered free lung function testing, education, and consultations with a paediatric respiratory and sleep specialist, plus support from a nurse and respiratory scientist.

Little three-year-old Max and other local children could get care without long travel.

With asthma rates higher in the region, early checks and ongoing support make a real difference to children’s health and wellbeing.

Two more children’s clinics are planned in Albany later this year.

Families can speak with their GP to arrange a referral. All appointments are fully bulk billed.

February is one of the peak months for children's asthma hospital admissions in Australia, with around 20-25% of cases occurring when kids return to school.

Why does this happen? Well, when students head back to the classroom, several changes can trigger symptoms, including:

• New environments and shared classroom spaces
• Dust and other indoor allergens
• Cold and flu viruses from classmates
• Stress or excitement about returning to school
• Changes in routine over the holidays that have affected preventer use

What can parents do?

Book an appointment with your GP for an asthma check-up.

You can also ask for a referral to Respiratory Care WA’s Children’s Respiratory Hub, where families can access bulk-billed lung function testing, personalised information and practical support, such as how to correctly use an inhaler and spacer.

At home, make sure your child takes their preventer as prescribed, and encourage them to let you know if they are using their blue reliever more often than usual.

In an emergency, always call 000 for an ambulance.

The Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting extreme heat across WA today, with Perth expected to reach 40°C and Geraldton peaking at 44°C.

Hot weather can worsen asthma symptoms, so take extra care.

Stay alert for any wheezing, coughing or chest tightness and keep your reliever close at hand.

Stay hydrated, keep cool and plan your day around the hottest periods.

If you or someone you know starts to feel unwell, seek help and follow your Asthma Action Plan.

Take care and stay safe.

Exciting news for Australians living with asthma!

Congratulations to Dr Sanjay Ramakrishnan, Respiratory Care WA Clinical Advisor / Consultant Respiratory Physician and the Institute for Respiratory Health team for leading a world-first clinical trial right here in Perth that could change the way asthma is treated globally.

This study is exploring how advanced biological therapies like dupilumab could help to prevent asthma flare-ups before they start and reduce the need for daily inhalers.

The trial will involve 50 participants in Perth. If you or someone you know might be interested, head to the Institute for Respiratory Health website or email the clinical trial team at clinicaltrials@resphealth.uwa.edu.au for more info.

📍 We’re headed to Albany!

It’s an exciting start to the year for the team as we bring our first children’s respiratory specialist clinic to Albany, marking an important milestone in expanding access to care for families across the Great Southern region.

Supported by Telethon7 Perth, the clinic will run over two days (22–23 January) and will be overseen by Paediatric Respiratory and Sleep Specialist Dr James Gibbons, alongside our amazing respiratory nurse educator Erin Grundy and respiratory scientist Aoife Lowe.

Families will have access to free lung function testing and specialist respiratory consultations, helping reduce long wait times and the need to travel to Perth.

Appointment spaces are still available and are fully bulk billed. Families can speak to their GP about arranging a referral.

Two additional children’s specialist clinics in Albany are planned for later this year.

Summer and swimming go hand in hand 🏊

Did you know that it is one of the most asthma-friendly ways to stay active, and recent research has shown that the benefits outweigh the risks when pools are well-maintained?

Stay safe by taking your reliever 10 minutes before you hop in the pool, rest when you need to, and enjoy a lung-friendly way to stay cool this season.

Did you know asthma and COPD medicines just became more affordable?

From 1 January 2026, the PBS co-payment dropped from $31.60 to $25 meaning preventer inhalers now cost the same as over-the-counter relievers for the first time 🙌

For many people, cost has been a major barrier to using preventers regularly. In fact, 69% of people with asthma don’t use their preventer as prescribed. This change is a big step towards better breathing and better control.

There’s more good news too.

Eligible patients can now access 60 days’ worth of medication on one prescription, instead of 30 saving time, money, and extra trips to the pharmacy.

To see if this applies to you or your family, have a chat with your GP or pharmacist, or visit health.gov.au/cheaper-medicines.

Small changes can make a big difference for our community.

The New Year is a great time to check in on your asthma management and make sure you or your loved ones are set up for a healthy start to 2026. 💙

📋 Your New Year Asthma Checklist

• Make sure your asthma emergency kit is fully stocked

• Check the expiry date on your reliever inhaler

• Review your inhaler and spacer technique with your healthcare team so your medicine can reach your lungs effectively

• Wash your spacer with warm water and dishwashing detergent, and let it air-dry with the bubbles on

• Replace your spacer if you’ve had the same one since last year

• Update your written Asthma Action Plan with your GP — especially if you noticed new symptoms or triggers over summer

• Try keeping a symptom diary to track symptoms and reliever use before your next appointment
