🔬 Research Spotlight: Diet, the microbiome & melanoma

Research continues to highlight the connection between nutrition, the gut microbiome, and cancer treatment outcomes.

Findings suggest that diet—particularly fibre intake—may influence how individuals respond to immunotherapy for advanced melanoma.

🧬 The gut microbiome plays a key role in immune function
🥦 Nutrition may impact treatment effectiveness
🔍 This is an evolving and rapidly growing area of research

Multiple research teams are working to unravel this complex relationship and use it to help optimise treatment outcomes.

💛 Encouragingly, more people living with advanced melanoma have reasons to feel hopeful.

As this science develops, lifestyle medicine—including yoga therapy—has much to contribute in helping translate research into meaningful, sustainable changes.

Skin cancer is common in Australia — but that doesn’t mean it’s minor. 🌞

Wisdom Yoga Institute founder Dr Chandrika Gibson has shared a personal reflection about her experience with skin cancer.

Since age 25 she has had multiple skin cancers removed, including melanoma. Over the years this has meant repeated surgeries, recovery periods, and learning to navigate the emotional and practical realities of illness.

In our recent blog, she reflects on:
🏥 impact of repeated treatment
❤️‍🩹 challenges of recovery
😎 body image and identity
🥰 support of community
🧘 yoga during healing

It’s an honest story about health, vulnerability, and resilience. Link in our bio.

March is Melanoma Awareness Month in Australia — a time to raise awareness, support research, and encourage early detection.

Australia has some of the highest melanoma rates in the world, and community awareness plays an important role in prevention and early diagnosis.

This month we’ll be sharing:
🌅 research insights
🌅 personal stories
🌅 awareness resources
🌅 ways our community can get involved

One way to take part is by joining a event happening across Australia this month. These community walks raise funds for melanoma research and support people affected by the disease.

Small actions like learning more, sharing information, or attending an event, can help make a difference.

☀️ Save this post to find the events later
☀️ Share to your story to help raise awareness

🌏 From New Zealand to Bangkok — our Yoga Therapy Trainees came together online last weekend.

Our Mind Body Wellness Module kicked off with a beautiful yoga therapy–sized group of teachers joining us from across Australia, New Zealand, and Thailand.

We began exploring positive psychology and motivational interviewing, stepping into breakout groups to practice the roles of yoga therapist and client. These sessions sparked insightful conversations about listening deeply, asking empowering questions, and supporting meaningful change.

The discussions were thoughtful, reflective, and full of “aha” moments as participants shared experiences from their own teaching and therapeutic work. 💬✨

Next weekend we dive into Ayurvedic models of health, yogic diet, nutrition science, and lifestyle medicine—connecting ancient wisdom with modern research.

✨ Want to join the next module?
Our Applied Anatomy & Physiology training begins July 31, where we explore pain science, movement as medicine, somatic self-awareness, therapeutics, and more.

👉 Join us and deepen your ability to support students through yoga therapy.

What is Yoga Therapy? 💭

Join Chandrika & Jean for a FREE Online Discussion + Yoga Nidra.

We’ll be exploring what yoga therapy is (and isn’t), yoga teachers and their scope of practice, boundaries, and more. 🙏

This is an important conversation for yoga teachers, trainees, and anyone curious about yoga therapy.

Yoga and meditation were once called “alternative.” 🔮
Not because they didn’t work but because science hadn’t caught up yet.

As research began to study what people had practised for centuries, the evidence became clear. Movement, breath, mindfulness, and lifestyle-based practices support nervous system regulation, pain management, mental health, and chronic illness care.

Yoga Therapy grew to fill the gaps where conventional systems alone were not enough.

Today, Yoga Therapy is integrative, evidence-based care, working alongside medical and allied health professionals to support the whole person, not just symptoms.

This is not an alternative to healthcare.
It’s part of the future of it.

💫 What do yoga therapists actually do? 💫

More than just movement.
Yoga therapists assess and support people holistically using evidence-based research. We use multiple lenses: physical, nervous system, lifestyle, and lived experience.

When it comes to using movement as a therapeutic tool, we work within a clear, ethical framework taught in our Applied Anatomy & Physiology module.

A simple mantra guides the process:

Move · Monitor · Modify

MOVE
Support safe, appropriate movement based on the person’s current capacity, health history, and goals, not a one-size-fits-all sequence.

MONITOR
Observe responses over time, including pain, fatigue, breath, nervous system cues, and overall function.

MODIFY
Adapt practices as needed: adjusting load, range, pacing, or referring to other health professionals when safety or scope requires it.

This approach allows yoga therapists to work confidently, collaboratively, and safely, alongside healthcare and allied health teams.
