Lawson Clinical Psychology Improving lives through excellence in psychological healthcare in West Perth and Claremont

Based in two central Perth locations, Lawson Clinical Psychology offers a wide range of services, which allows our clients to choose from 26 qualified and experienced clinical psychologists, supported by six administration team members. All of our clinical psychologists have a minimum of six years training, in addition to hospital and outpatient workplace experience, where they have had exposure treating a range of psychological difficulties. We strive to provide a warm and welcoming environment at our clinic and we aim to build inclusive and positive relationships with our clients, our team and our community. We have clinics conveniently located in character properties in the suburbs of West Perth and Claremont. We have carefully selected the decor and furnishings within our clinics to create a relaxing, welcoming and homely atmosphere. We value clinical excellence and our goal is to provide the highest quality care to our clients. This, together with our commitment to excellence within our approach to the training and supervision we provide to other health professionals and our team, is what sets us apart from other practices. Our approach is client-focussed as we see the value in understanding our client's unique and individual needs, as this enables us to help them develop their goals – and just as importantly, design a plan to achieve them.

FAQs about the OCD group at Lawson Clinical Psychology

Are you interested in joining a group therapy session? Perhaps you have heard about our upcoming OCD group starting on the 3rd of March?

Feeling unsure about joining a group? That’s understandable. We are here to answer any questions you might have about our groups.

Q: What should I expect when attending my first group session?

A: Most or all of the first group session will usually be an ‘introductory session’. After arriving, you will meet with your therapists and fellow group members. During this time, your therapist will discuss expectations for the group and provide any necessary information related to confidentiality or other details related to participation. Once everyone has introduced themselves, your therapists will then invite a shared discussion about the goals of the group (e.g. to learn ways to manage anxiety, worry, OCD, emotions), and will share an overview of the information and skills that will be covered throughout the coming weeks of the program.

If you saw our recent post on OCD symptoms, you may be wondering how you can break free from unwanted intrusive thoughts and repetitive rituals.

Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is a gold-standard, evidence-based treatment for OCD.

ERP involves gradually facing feared thoughts or situations, while learning to resist engaging in repetitive rituals or compulsions.

With the guidance of a therapist, repeated exposure exercises help clients learn that anxiety reduces naturally over time - helping clients break free from OCD.

If you are seeking support, our upcoming ‘Break Free from OCD’ group therapy program offers structured, science-backed strategies in a supportive group setting.

Sleep is not only about physical rest - it is about regulation.

When our sleep is disrupted, the brain does not fully down-regulate and can remain in a state of heightened arousal. 🚨

When the nervous system stays on high alert, sleep becomes physiologically more difficult, with flow-on effects for emotion regulation, stress tolerance, and cognitive clarity 🧠. This is why simply trying harder to sleep often backfires.

Effective support focuses on calming the nervous system and addressing the thoughts and behaviours that keep the brain on high alert. ‼️

With small, intentional changes, guided by evidence-based strategies, we can create meaningful improvements in sleep and overall wellbeing 🛌🧘‍♀️.

If sleep has been an ongoing challenge, support is available. 🤝 Our team of clinical psychologists work with you to understand the underlying drivers of your sleep difficulties and provide a tailored approach using evidence-informed care.

Did you know that OCD is often referred to as ‘the doubting disorder’? This is because individuals with OCD often experience persistent and intrusive thoughts that cause them to doubt their own actions, memory, and decisions.

These thoughts can be so overwhelming that they lead to compulsive behaviours, such as excessive checking or reassurance-seeking, or mental rumination, in an attempt to alleviate the anxiety caused by the doubt.

People with OCD are often highly intelligent, and may be very self-aware that their doubts are illogical and excessive. This can lead them to worry that they are ‘going crazy’ or ‘losing their mind’ because they cannot shake them off and stop their negative thoughts or compulsions.

In fact, because OCD doubts are unwanted and intrusive, logically analysing them typically does not resolve the doubts. Trying to ‘logic away OCD’ is a bit like trying to get out of a hole by digging in further, and usually has the opposite effect of reinforcing the OCD overthinking spiral!

Need support breaking free of spiraling obsessive thoughts and doubts? We have a range of group skills classes that can help you learn science-backed strategies to do just that!

🎯 2026 SMART Goal Setting 🎯

Are you ready to conquer 2026? 🚀

One powerful way to kickstart your year is by setting SMART goals. 🧠💪

Goal setting helps us focus our actions and move closer towards our values and what truly matters.

So, what are SMART goals?

🔍 Specific: Define clear objectives - what do you want to achieve?
📊 Measurable: Track your progress and celebrate small wins along the way.
🎯 Achievable: Set realistic goals that challenge you without becoming overwhelming.
🤔Relevant: Ensure your goals align with your personal values and long-term objectives.
⏰ Time-bound: Set a clear timeframe to stay focused and motivated.

If you would like support in kick starting your 2026 SMART goals, or to schedule an appointment with one of our experienced clinical psychologists, please contact our Client Relationship Team on 6143 4499, or email via our contact page.

Introducing Julia ✨

Julia is a Clinical Psychology Registrar who is passionate about helping children, adolescents, and adults deepen their self-understanding and feel more grounded in daily life.

She has a particular interest in neurodiversity and eating disorders, and often supports clients experiencing anxiety, low mood, emotional dysregulation, identity exploration, and challenges at school, work, or in relationships.

Julia believes that supporting someone through therapy means walking beside them with steadiness, warmth, and gentle encouragement 🤝. Whether someone arrives with clear direction or simply a sense that something needs to shift, she works collaboratively to find clarity at a pace that feels manageable.

Outside the therapy room, Julia loves travelling, exploring new coffee and pastry spots around Perth ☕🥐, spending time at the beach and with her dog, Hudson, or diving into a new creative hobby 🎨.

Welcome, Julia! 👏

Christmas can be a very challenging time for people struggling with an eating disorder or a difficult relationship with food.

While some may find comfort in the slower pace of the holidays, others may feel increased stress from disrupted routines, family gatherings, and a greater focus on food.

If this time of year is challenging for you, you’re not alone and support is available 💛. Check out our blog post by Dr. Kim Eaton for some helpful, practical tips on how to navigate eating during the festive season!
