Did you know your own blood can be collected, processed, and returned to you during surgery?

It's called autotransfusion, and ABM has been providing this service across NSW since 2006. It's used in orthopaedic, spinal, vascular, obstetric, and cardiac surgery, anywhere there's significant blood loss.

For patients, it means fewer transfusions of donated blood and fewer associated risks. For hospitals, it's evidence-based practice aligned with the national Patient Blood Management guidelines.

Last year, members of the ABM team travelled to the Solomon Islands with the ALEAN neurosurgical outreach program. It was challenging, eye-opening, and one of the most rewarding things we've done.

We're returning in November 2026. Follow along as we prepare for the trip and share what we learned the first time around.

Ever wondered what microbubbles in a bypass circuit look like, and why they matter for patient outcomes?

We put together a quick explainer. Check out the full carousel on our LinkedIn page, or ask us anything in the comments.

Microbubbles in the bypass circuit aren't new news. But the evidence on what they do to patients keeps growing. We put together a quick primer on gaseous microemboli: what they are, where they come from, and what you can do about them. Swipe through, and if you want to dig deeper, the research links...

Meet the ABM team.

Between us we've got perfusionists, autotransfusionists, a medical director, an anaesthesia practitioner turned blood management specialist, and a former skydiving instructor.

We work across multiple hospitals in Sydney and beyond, and no two days look the same. This week alone we've covered cardiac surgeries, human and others!, perioperative blood salvage, given 2 in-services and a presentation to an anaesthetic group, cleaned HCU's and written a heap of content. Some of which you'll be seeing soon.

We'll be introducing the team properly over the coming weeks. Watch this space.

6:30am. Circuit primed. Coffee working. Surgeon not here yet.

Some days start earlier than others. This is what perfusion looks like before everyone else gets here. Things generally start a bit earlier in Australia compared to other countries I’ve worked in. I remember when I was told we had to be on the floor for 6:30 when I got my first job in Aus. I think I checked twice before pretending that was normal for me.

Our Managing Director Hayden Dando started ABM in 2006 with a simple idea: blood management in Australian hospitals could be better.

Twenty years on, our team provides perfusion, cell salvage, and specialised clinical services across NSW and Victoria. We're going to be sharing more of what we do here. Follow along if you're interested in what happens inside the operating theatre.
