Motor Neuron Disease (MND), is a progressive neurological condition that affects the motor neurons—specialised nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord that control voluntary muscle movement.
The exact cause is often unknown, but it may involve genetic, environmental, or immune-related factors. About 5–10% of cases are inherited (familial MND).
MND has no cure and is typically life-limiting, but progression and survival time vary. Some people live only a few years after diagnosis, while others live much longer.

Disability support workers play a vital and rewarding role, but the job can also come with a range of challenges, including:

1. Emotional Strain
• Burnout: Constant exposure to clients’ physical and emotional needs can lead to fatigue.
• Compassion fatigue: Supporting individuals with complex needs over time can take a toll emotionally.
• Grief and loss: Workers may form close bonds and feel deeply impacted by a client’s declining health or death.

2. Physical Demands
• Manual handling: Tasks like lifting or assisting with mobility can strain the body, especially if done improperly or without help.
• Fatigue: Long shifts, night work, or irregular hours can lead to exhaustion.

3. Challenging Behaviours
• Aggression or non-cooperation: Some clients may have behaviours that are difficult to manage, especially those with intellectual disabilities or mental health conditions.
• Communication barriers: Clients with limited speech or understanding may make it hard to build trust or provide effective care.

4. Workplace Conditions
• Understaffing: Being short-staffed can increase pressure and workload.
• Low pay: Many workers feel that the pay does not match the level of responsibility or emotional effort.

5. Professional Boundaries
• Blurring of lines: Forming close relationships with clients while maintaining professionalism can be tricky.
• Family dynamics: Navigating expectations and boundaries with clients’ families can be delicate.

6. Lack of Support or Training
• Limited resources: Some may not receive adequate training for complex needs like PEG feeding, epilepsy, or autism-specific strategies.
• Isolation: Working one-on-one in the community or in a client’s home can feel isolating without team support.

Despite these challenges, many support workers find the role deeply fulfilling. Proper training, self-care, supervision, and strong workplace support can make a big difference in managing these pressures.

Many families in the NRL community have been touched by MND and they are active champions for the Association. Activities will be hosted across three club grounds:

Joondalup Giants Rugby League Club
