Applications for Cicada Innovations’ Elevate pre-accelerator program are now open.

Aimed at inventors, scientists and their teams within health and medical research, this program will look at your project or ideas from a commercialisation perspective – giving you a plan to look beyond the lab!

First one of the year!

Cicada Innovations and Southern Star Research are hosting a presentation at Westmead with visiting biotech executive and serial entrepreneur, Dr. David Bearss, co-founder and Chairman of Azunic. As the industry moves toward replacing traditional animal models with more advanced methodologies, this session explores the revolutionary role of AI and machine learning in pre-clinical drug testing.

This one’s suited to clinicians and healthcare providers in oncology, clinical trials or working with AI in drug development.

Our thanks to our partners, stakeholders and people from across the Westmead Health Precinct who made 2025 a year to remember. This year, we:

✅ Hosted several national and international delegations to Westmead, including groups from Singapore and the Republic of Korea.
✅ Co-hosted the ‘Harvard Health Systems Innovation Lab International Hackathon’ with the University of Sydney.
✅ Co-hosted ‘Innovate Western Sydney’ with the University of Sydney.
✅ Supported NSW Health with the Future Health Symposium and Worldbuilding Competition.
✅ Supported the Westmead Research Hub’s ‘Westmead Research and Innovation Conference.’
✅ And so much more!

What do you get when you put an investor and three start-ups on a dating show? The Perfect Match! ❤️

This year at Innovate Western Sydney, we added a fun twist to a high-stake pitching session by reimagining it as a match-making experience between investors and start-ups. Investors challenged our founders with the ultimate question, “if I gave you $500,000 tomorrow, what would you achieve in the next 12 months?”

It wasn’t just entertaining for the investors and start-ups but it was fully interactive for the audience too, who voted in a live poll for their favourite pitch. All in all, this pitch session stood out from the usual format while still highlighting the real considerations that shape investor–start-up conversations.

Thank you to our investors for taking the time to be part of the session and for providing well-informed insights and a big thank you to our start-ups for bringing their energy, ideas, and bold visions to the stage

What’s better than attending an event like Innovate Western Sydney? Getting the opportunity to tour the incredible facilities at the Westmead Innovation Centre and Maker Spaces.

From cutting-edge labs to collaborative learning environments and hospital-based research, the visit highlighted the depth of capability and talent thriving right here in Western Sydney.

Thank you to the teams who opened their doors and shared the inspiring work underway.

It was an incredible experience to co-host this year’s Innovate Western Sydney showcase with University of Sydney, with support from our amazing partners across Western Sydney. 🎉

The energy on the day was electrifying, from sharing stories and knowledge to building new connections. It was a true celebration of Western Sydney’s diverse and thriving innovation ecosystem.

It was inspiring to see entrepreneurs, researchers, industry partners and government come together with a shared purpose: celebrating Western Sydney and the bright future we are creating together.

A groundbreaking study published in Nature Medicine has revealed that the APOE ε4 gene variant, long known as the strongest genetic risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease, triggers similar immune system changes across multiple neurodegenerative diseases.

Led by Dr Caitlin Finney and Dr Artur Shvetcov from the Westmead Institute for Medical Research (WIMR), alongside international collaborators, the research analysed thousands of blood and cerebrospinal fluid samples to uncover how APOE ε4 affects immune responses across those with Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, frontotemporal dementia and ALS.
