The association aims to raise the profile of childhood liver disease and increase the funding that goes toward this lesser known but very significant health issue by:
- Raising community and corporate awareness of the existence and impact of paediatric liver disease.
- Creating a forum and support network for families to share information and tips for
managing their child’s condition.
- Providing guides and resources for those wishing to undertake fundraising activities.
- Developing education programs targeting the recognition of paediatric liver conditions for relevant health practitioners. Liver Kids also hopes to raise funding to advance research, boost
resources for patient care and provide the most up-to-date equipment for a Liver Transplant Unit.

There are not enough words to describe what Dr Shun means to so many of our families over decades. As an internationally recognised leader in the field of paediatric liver transplant, he has cared for our children with true compassion and determination. Thank you Dr Shun, we are honoured to be part of your legacy and wish you a long and happy retirement.

FAREWELL | For hundreds of families, Dr Albert Shun is more than a surgeon. He is a real-world Superman who gave their children a second chance of life.

Whether it be transplant surgery, cancer operations, or even using ping pong balls in theatre - Dr Shun is a pioneering, world-class surgeon who has built a reputation as a clinician focussed on compassionate, family-centred care.

But there becomes a time when all heroes must hang up their capes and that time has now come for Dr Shun.

Leaving a long-lasting legacy in the surgical field globally, Dr Shun is retiring following an incredible career spanning more than four decades.

Dr Shun was the first recognised paediatric transplant surgeon in Australia and across his remarkable career, performed more than 500 transplants.

“What I love about being a transplant surgeon is we’re able to keep families together... this is what has kept me going all these years," Dr Shun said.

On behalf of these families, his colleagues, and our Network, congratulations Dr Shun on a truly exceptional career. He will be dearly missed but his legacy will continue to shape the Hospital's story well into the future.

With the usual disclaimer to discuss these issues with your child's medical team...this recent ABC article suggests that the mRNA COVID-19 vaccines (currently being used in the US and UK, made by Pfizer and Moderna) will be recommended for immuno-suppressed people:

Almost all Australians will be recommended the COVID-19 vaccine. But what about children, pregnant women and immunosuppressed people?

This is from a reputable UK source and suggests that immune suppression in children does not increase the risk of severe Covid-19: https://www.bmj.com/content/369/bmj.m1802 (Always talk to your child's team for specific information)

Doctors should reassure parents and carers of children who are immunocompromised that immunosuppression does not seem to increase the risk of severe covid-19, the UK National Institute for Health and Care Excellence advises in a rapid guideline.1 “Covid-19 usually causes a mild, self-limiting illn...

We have put a post up on our website about how to set a routine for school at home. We aren't saying you should do this - as of this morning Australian government advice is that schools should stay open. But, there may come a time when you need to keep your kids home. The post is specific to high school aged kids, but there are suggestions for adapting it for younger ones.

We thought we might put this post together to give some tips on how to manage life at home with your immune-suppressed kid, or kid with a chronic illness during a time of great uncertainty and publ…
