Our very own member made it to the Laura Folk Fair! 🀩

Today was such a big success at the Laura Folk Fair!

I was up at 6am getting everything ready, and by 9am my stall was all set up. The gates opened at 9:30am, and it turned out to be such a rewarding day β€” it was lovely seeing so many familiar faces stop by.

A huge thank you to Arj for looking after my stall while I made a quick dash to the bathroom β€” a little oversight on my part forgetting I’d need someone to hold the fort while I disappeared for five minutes 🀣

I’m a little sunburnt and completely exhausted, but it was such a beautiful day and absolutely worth it.

Now to do it all again tomorrow! And yes… I am definitely feeling the tiredness now!

πŸ’œ Lighting Up Purple for National Epilepsy Awareness Day πŸ’œ

Tonight, 26 March, HMAS Whyalla will be illuminated in purple in support of National Epilepsy Awareness Day.

Epilepsy is a complex neurological condition that can affect anyone, at any stage of life. There are over 114 different epilepsy syndromes and seizure types, and it is estimated that 1 in 26 people will experience a seizure during their lifetime, with 1 in 100 developing epilepsy permanently.

In South Australia, approximately 63,000 people live with epilepsy, with a further 24,000 in the Northern Territory. For many, epilepsy can be a devastating condition to manage, impacting individuals, families and carers alike. Tragically, 1 in 1,000 people with epilepsy die each year due to Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP).

The Epilepsy Centre, a not-for-profit organisation based in Adelaide, has been supporting people living with epilepsy for over 50 years, providing vital services, advocacy and education across South Australia and the Northern Territory.
By lighting up HMAS Whyalla in purple, we stand with everyone affected by epilepsy and help raise awareness, understanding and support within our community.

The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (IDERD) is observed on the 21st of March every year, as an opportunity to build awareness of racial discrimination and its impact, and focus on how we can address and prevent racial discrimination in our communities.

South Australia's Equal Opportunity Act makes it unlawful to discriminate against a person on the basis of their nationality, country of origin, colour or ancestry. Everyone in our diverse state deserves to be treated with respect, dignity, and fairness. We're all different, but we deserve equal respect. 🀝

Equal Opportunity SA's WE'RE EQUAL initiative helps organisations show that they have made a commitment to zero tolerance for discrimination. You can learn more about WE'RE EQUAL here πŸ‘‰https://www.equalopportunity.sa.gov.au/equal

If you want to learn more about IDERD, the Australian Human Rights Commission has developed a series of resources about the history and significance of the day, and taking action against racism. πŸ‘‰ https://humanrights.gov.au/resource-hub/by-resource-type/publications/race/international-day-for-the-elimination-of-racial-discrimination-2026?mc_cid=37391efbea&mc_eid=c299a0950f

Today is World Down Syndrome Day.

This year’s theme, Together Against Loneliness, reminds us that everyone deserves to feel welcome, valued, included and connected.

At WWDA, we know inclusion is a human rights issue. Through our work on the CRPD, we continue to advocate for the rights of people with disabilities to participate in community life, build meaningful relationships, and live free from stigma and exclusion.

Today, and every day, we stand with people with Down syndrome and their families, communities and advocates.
