Plastics affect fertility. 2 types of chemicals used to make plastics are the ones to watch out for. This is because they mimic oestrogen and testoserone tricking the body into thinking it has enough of those hormones. As a result the ovaries and testees stop making as much s*x hormone as they should and this affects fertility.

Phthalates
These are used to make plastic soft and flexible. They are in hundreds of everyday products from your shampoo, to your nail polish and even the plastic wrap around your sandwich. In women phthalates decrease libido and increase early puberty, premature ovarian failure, miscarriage and premature birth. In men they lower testosterone level, diminishing s***m count.

Bisphenol A (BPA)
This is a chemical used to harden plastic. You’ll find it in plastic food containers and water bottles. It's oestrogen mimicking, affecting female ferility. In men it can reduce s***m count and affect s*xual function.

What can you do?
It’s tricky to go phthalate or BPA free because these chemicals are hidden in so many items we use every day. Some simple tips:

✅Look for the number 3 inside the universal recycling symbol usually molded into the plastic on the bottom of the product – this indicates phthalates are present.
✅Look for the word phthalate in the ingredients list of cosmetics you use.
✅Minimise the use of cosmetics and perfumed products when trying to conceive.
✅Never microwave food in plastic containers.
✅Go BPA free by switching to glass containers.

You can improve your egg health in just 90 days with some simple changes.

DO’s
Take a prenatal vitamin, particularly one containing folate which is really important for egg quality, maturation and even implantation.

Take Co-Enzyme Q10, its been shown to improve egg quality and increase pregnancy rates. It also improves the response of the ovaries to IVF treatments.

Eat more leafy greens – they’re packed with anti-oxidants which protects the DNA in your eggs from damage. Greens also help balance your hormones for fertility by increasing progesterone levels and reducing oestrogen dominance.

DONT's

Avoid products with phthalates and BPA. Check your cosmetics and toiletries for phthalates, stop using plastic containers and cutlery, and ditch plastic water bottles. These plastics mimic oestrogen, upsetting your hormone balance.

Its best to cut out alcohol completely if you can as it reduces egg quality. Why take the risk?

Minimise refined/processed sugar in your diet. Not only is it pro-inflammatory, it also leads to insulin resistance which makes it harder to conceive.

My record breaking twins!

I wanted twins so much! I visualised them, I dreamed of them, I imagined them.... I did this even though my specialist first said a double embryo transfer wasn’t possible, I was under 40. But because the embryos were later graded as poor quality, they decided to pop them both in.

My specialist clinic had never had twins from Grade E embryos before!

Some natural alternatives you can try when you've been diagnosed with endometriosis or PCOS:

1/ Omega 3 fatty acids block an enzyme which produces prostaglandin hormones which are responsible for setting off inflammation. Studies on omega 3 have shown promising results in endometriosis as well as several other inflammatory conditions including endometriosis rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, psoriasis, lupus, multiple sclerosis and migraines. Omega 3 may even help stabilise blood sugar levels and insulin resistance - the hallmark of PCOS.

2/ Studies have shown that curcumin, the active ingredient in turmeric, not only blocks the action of inflammatory molecules in the body, it also reduces damage to DNA which can in turn lead to inflammation and chronic illnesses like endometriosis and PCOS.

3/ Ginger has strong anti-inflammatory properties that can help with menstrual pain, endometriosis flares and may even protect against breast and ovarian cancer.

Studies have shown that caffeine affects fertility.

- Drinking 300 mg of caffeine increases the risk of early pregnancy loss or spontaneous abortion

- Drinking 600 mg of caffeine more than doubles the risk of miscarriage.

It’s still unclear, however, if caffeine impacts the time it takes for couples trying to conceive naturally to get pregnant.

If you’re having trouble getting pregnant, why take the risk? its best to play it safe with caffeine. Fertility specialists advise ideally limiting your intake to no more than 100mg a day.

Sleep patterns definitely impact your fertility.
Getting the recommended 7-9 hours each night can improve your levels of progesterone, estrogen and follicle stimulating hormones – all of which are crucial to achieving and carrying a pregnancy.

Studies have shown that working night shifts discupts your circadian rhythm, causing hormonal imbalances, lower estrogen levels, and irregular menstrual cycles. These changes can make it harder to achieve a pregnancy, and carry a pregnancy to term.

Blue light from electronics devices suppresses melatonin, a key hormone that both helps you sleep and protects when they are close to ovulation. Without adequate melatonin production, your egg quality can suffer and make achieving a pregnancy more difficult.

For women undergoing IVF, those with low quality sleep have lower rates of fertility than those getting adequate rest.

Endo is one of the most common causes of female infertility. It affects 1 in 10 women and can be really debilitating. The most common symptom is painful periods.

Sadly, far too many doctors are dismissive of painful periods and women have been taught that it’s just something you need to put up with. I'm a doctor and that was my exact experience. And that’s why it takes an average of 7 years to get a diagnosis!

If you have bad periods that aren't improving, don't just accept the pill or anti-inflammatories, INSIST on seeing a specialist.
