Breathing is not just a function of the lungs alone.

The Zone of Apposition (ZOA), ribcage, and pelvis all play a crucial role in the mechanics of breathing.

The ZOA is where the diaphragm attaches to the inner surface of the ribcage, and during inhalation, it expands and creates negative pressure, drawing air into the lungs.

The ribcage protects the lungs and heart, and during inhalation, it expands, allowing for more space for the lungs to fill with air.

The pelvis supports the diaphragm and other respiratory muscles and allows for deeper inhalation
By understanding the relationship between the ZOA, ribcage, pelvis, and breathing, we can learn how to breathe more efficiently and effectively, leading to better overall health, movement and wellbeing.

✖️ FIX YOUR THRUST ✖️.
▪️ Today I want to talk about the relationship between CAUSE & EFFECT and we’re going to use the hip thrust and as an example.
👉 Cause = Lumbar Hyperextension.
👉 Outcome = Lower Back Pain (QL, LES Hypertonia, Lx. Facet Irritation).
👉 Solution = Correct Movement | Loading Patterns.
▪️ Often in Physical Therapy were so determined to find the specific structure, or tissue that is responsible for an individuals pain that we miss a big piece of the puzzle.....
🏃‍♂️ MOVEMENT PATTERNS 🏃‍♂️.
▪️ How the individual actually executes or performs a SPECIFIC movement is more important than the exercise itself.
▪️ This cannot be assessed with conventional ROM testing, provocative tests, palpation etc. We need to get them to perform the SPECIFIC movement to identify how they are using their body.
▪️ There is little point in identifying the painful structure or tissue if we can’t identify the CAUSE factor and/ or MOVEMENT deficiency that has created the outcome or EFFECT.
▪️ Any Exercise has the ability to create a positive or negative outcome - The result lies within the ex*****on and the dosage
Hip Thrust Ex*****on:
✅ Vertical Shin Angle
✅ Posterior Pelvic Tilt
✅ Cervical & Thoracic Flexion
✅ Ribs Depressed
✅ Glutes & Abdominals on

27/06/2019

✖️ DISC BULGE REHAB ✖️.
▪️ The Reverse Hyperextension is a fantastic exercise to develop strength through the posterior chain (Hamstrings, Erectors, Glutes).
▪️ It can also be used as an early stage rehab exercise for a Lumbar Disc Bulge as it provides a decompressive effect on the eccentric phase (flexion), which allows space for the disc to heal.
▪️ The concentric phase (extension) is great to engage the glutes however can sometimes be sensitive in the acute phases of lower back pain.

To perform the exercise:
1️⃣ Begin with a slightly rounded Thoracic Spine.
2️⃣ Start with the heels together and slightly turned out (external rotation).
3️⃣ Keeping the lower back flat against the pad, raise both heels towards the ceiling.
4️⃣ Hold the squeeze at the top
▪️ Note: Ensure that you don’t hyper extend at the top of the rep or arch your lower back, keep the tension on the glutes and hamstrings

26/06/2019

✖️ LEG PRESS | BACK PAIN ✖️.
▪️ Have you ever experienced Lower Back Pain when performing the leg press?
▪️This is a common complaint I get from a lot of patients! But they can’t seem to figure out why
Generally it is one of TWO things......
1️⃣ POOR HIP MOBILITY

2️⃣ GOING TOO DEEP
▪️ As you can see in reps 1 - 3 of this video there is no obvious issues, however in reps 4 - 6 and we start to see my ROUND and tuck underneath.
▪️ This is commonly referred to as “BUTT WINK” 😉🍑
▪️ This occurs when the Hip Joint “runs
out” of available range of motion and the Lumbar Spine compensates via Flexion to make up for the extra depth.

You can do THREE things to avoid this....
1️⃣ Improve HIP MOBILITY - Specifically in FLEXION.
2️⃣ Decrease RANGE OF MOTION - Stop at the point just prior to the butt wink.
3️⃣ Use a WIDER STANCE - Allowing for greater range of motion.
