We have a chrysalis in our back yard. It makes me think of the hibernating nature of the season and how in Chinese Medicine, Winter is a time to rest, repair and regenerate. A building of energy and momentum for something new and exciting in the Spring time x

Change of Season 💛 (and a busy bee in our pumpkin plant!) Whilst we are still getting some fab warm weather, there is a definite shift happening. This time leading into Autumn can still be humid and warm.. alternating with some cooler temps. In Chinese Med - this is the time to support your digestive system(spleen and stomach in TCM terms). Some tips: 🍠Incorporate more cooked and warm foods into your diet - pumpkin, sweet potato, carrot - orange foods are good! 🥒Eat a little less raw veg- instead, add some cooked veg into your salads along with quinoa or a light grain such as millet or barley.
🧦And, in this in between time, if it’s a bit chilly, keep your feet and lower back cosy warm. 💗

Rest.. it can be hard to get enough. However..are you getting the right types of rest? I recently came across the concept of the 7 types of rest ( by author and physician Dr. Saundra Dalton- Smith). It’s about getting a combo of rest types to help us to restore and reenergise.. I love this idea.
It can certainly be easy to lean into some rest activities more than others.. and good to note where the gaps are.
Here are some examples of each:
😴Physical Rest: getting adequate sleep. Settling the nervous system through practices such as yoga and breathwork.
🤔Mental Rest: setting good boundaries around work. Engaging in mindful activities/interests.
💗Emotional Rest: allowing time and space to freely express emotions.
🐾Social Rest: spending more time with the beings (human, furry, beaky) that love and energise us.
🎧Sensory Rest: taking regular breaks from devices and noise.
☀️Creative Rest: being in nature, looking at art, spending time around things that bring wonder.
💗Spiritual Rest: connecting with activities that bring you joy and a sense of purpose.. things that nourish the soul. 🤗

As mentioned in my previous post - here are a few strategies from a Chinese Medicine perspective - that can help with perimenopause and menopause symptoms. These are some general tips -A Chinese Medicine consultation and diagnosis will provide a more targeted and individual treatment 💛

Perimenopause/Menopause:
The transition into perimenopause and menopause can often be a wild ride. Fluctuating hormones and symptoms like hot flushes, mood swings, sleep disturbance, chronic pain and brain fog can be tough to navigate. While menopause typically occurs in early 50s, the years leading up to it (perimenopause) can be equally challenging.

Having gone through menopause in the last couple of years, I get how there can be many emotions at play too. At times relief and a sense of freedom, at other times grief, in acknowledging a transition from one life phase to another. But also, surprise... For example, I could never have imagined how my skin wouldn’t quite fit anymore – until it happened😄.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), this is an important life phase and an opportunity to recalibrate and reset. Constitution, lifestyle, environment and state of health, can really influence how your body navigates the process. There is so much Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture has to offer... wherever you are at. We all have a unique experience of this process, therefore, an individual and targeted approach with Acupuncture, herbal medicine, diet and lifestyle changes can help ease this transition.

When it comes to navigating the highs and lows of this time, I find, the more you can settle your nervous system the better. For me, that means a little less cardio, a bit more yoga, more strengthening and a piling on of the joyful things.
Because the more you can nourish your heart by doing the things that you love and being true to yourself, the more resilient and stronger you can become. 💕

I’ll be posting some perimenopause/menopause lifestyle tips soon xx.

Feeling the festive bloats?😙
Not sure about you, but I'm certainly eating all manner of yummy things.. and am feeling the consequences!
So...it's never a good idea to eat things that do not agree with you, however, sometimes its more the volume and the frequency that is the issue!
Here are some Chinese medicine strategies to help in this situation:
✔Give your digestive system some space. Eating til you are about 70% full allows for room in your tummy to process and assimilate your meals.
✔Include more cooked and warm foods into your diet that are easier to digest. Light grains like rice and oats, cooked veggies and simple dishes with minimal condiments and sauces.
❌ Decrease cold and raw food intake.
✔Eat more of your protein based and heavier meals earlier in the day when your digestive system is at its strongest.
✔Drink water at room temperature rather than ice cold.
✔Eat a lighter meal at night.
✔Stimulate digestion by adding some bitter, aromatic or pungent foods to your meal- for example: rocket, radicchio, fresh herbs such as mint, basil, coriander. Cardamom and fennel seed can also be helpful in aiding digestion of meat heavy meals.
✔Sip peppermint or green tea.

💖 And most importantly: Avoid eating on the run where possible. Take time out and enjoy the yummy food x

What things do you do to calm your nervous system and to relax? For me, floating around in a body of water is bliss!. There’s something in the rhythmic, repetitive action of swimming and the space between breaths that help the mind chatter to quiet. What strategies do you use? ☀️
