✨ Thriving Kids sounds like a dream, right? But dreams need scaffolding (and a bit of reality-testing).

Last week, our Practice Director, Lauren, added her voice to the national Inquiry. Because children can’t wait 12 months for an assessment. Because teachers can’t do it all without help. Because families deserve choice, not a one-size-fits-all system.

Lauren's open letter sets out what needs to change so Thriving Kids doesn’t just survive the headlines, but actually thrives in practice.

🌞 Daylight savings is here, which means extra time to enjoy the sunshine!

And with the school holidays in full swing, it’s the perfect chance to take therapy goals outside and turn nature into a playful learning space.

Here are a few fun ideas to try:

🍃 Nature Walks – Spot birds, trees, or flowers and encourage your child to describe what they see. Great for building vocabulary and expressive language.

🔍 Scavenger Hunts – Ask WH questions (“What colour is the flower?”) or give multi-step instructions to find nature treasures.

🌱 Planting Seeds – Practise sequencing words like “first” and “next,” ask questions, and explore new vocabulary as you dig, plant, and water.

🏃 Obstacle Courses – Use household items and give directions like “crawl under the table” or “hop around the chair.” Perfect for prepositions, verbs, and turn-taking.

Every outdoor adventure is an opportunity to learn, grow, and connect.

What are your favourite outdoor activities to support speech and language development?

🙌 A massive High 5 to Alessia, who has graduated from speech! 🎉

She has worked so hard in her sessions and at home, and it’s paid off. Alessia has now generalised all of her target sounds, smashed her assessment review with 100% accuracy, and achieved every one of her goals. 🌟

We’re so proud of you, Alessia. What an amazing achievement! 💜

As Jamie shares in this podcast snippet, AAC is often a short-term support that gives children a way to communicate right now while they continue building spoken communication skills. In fact, research shows AAC can actually increase spoken communication.

Whether it’s pictures on the fridge, a tablet, or a communication device - AAC is about reducing frustration, opening up opportunities for connection, and supporting children on their journey to confident communication. 🌱

During October (our Understanding Month) and in support of AAC Awareness Month, we invite you to keep growing your understanding of what AAC can really mean for children and families.

🎙️ Check out Episode 6: Unpacking Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) now on our website.

💜 This October is Understanding Month - a time to embrace diversity and grow our collective understanding of difference, inclusivity, and what that looks like in everyday life (now more than ever).

Throughout the month, we’ll be shining a spotlight on:

✨ ADHD
✨ AAC (Augmentative & Alternative Communication)
✨ Stuttering
✨ Down Syndrome
✨ Dyslexia
✨ Developmental Language Disorder (DLD)

At A Growing Understanding, we believe raising awareness is not enough. True impact comes from moving beyond acknowledgment to celebrating difference every day - creating spaces where every individual is seen, heard, and valued.

Our neurodiversity-affirming and family-centred approach means we are always learning and working to ensure our services are inclusive, accessible, and tailored to the unique needs of our community.

Stay tuned as we share insights, tips, and reflections throughout October and join us in celebrating the rich tapestry of experiences that make our community so vibrant. 🌟

The school holidays are here, and with them comes the juggle. Work deadlines that don’t pause, routines that shift, kids at home asking “what’s next?”, and the scramble to fit it all in.

It can feel busy, messy, even a little overwhelming. But hidden in that mess is where the magic often lives. The unplanned giggles, the afternoon walks, the chance to slow down and connect in simple ways.

So if these holidays feel a little chaotic, know that it’s not about doing everything perfectly. It’s about finding those small moments of connection that matter most. 💜

What’s one little spark of joy you’re hoping to find in the school holiday juggle?

🙌 Did you know we also give our team members High 5s?

We love celebrating the little (and big!) wins - whether it’s our clients achieving goals, or our amazing team showing up with care, creativity, and heart every day. 💜

Here’s a little Friday Flashback of a few moments where our team got the High 5 treatment too! ✨

Ever noticed how some children love to chat, while others take a little more time to warm up?

In this snippet from our latest podcast episode, Lauren chats with Jamie about the importance of understanding your child’s communication style.

Just like us adults, some children are naturally social and jump into conversations, while others may be more reserved and only respond when there’s a clear cue. Recognising these differences is often the first step in supporting your child’s communication journey.

And as Lauren shares, it’s not just about understanding your child's preferences. Being aware of your own communication style and how that dynamic plays out in daily life is important, too.

💬 Did you know the way you respond to your child can make a big difference to their communication?

Modelling and recasting are simple strategies that help children build vocabulary, develop clearer language, and grow their communication skills and confidence - all while keeping interactions positive and pressure-free.

We’ve created a FREE resource with examples and easy tips you can use at home in everyday conversations.
