There’s this powerful process I’ve been practising that takes my nervous horse from:
Constantly shifting, tension in his eyes, tail swishing…

To a soft face, dropping his head low, utterly relaxed, still posture—and deeeeeep exhales. Everything just settles.

This didn’t come from ā€œmoving his feetā€ or ā€œbeing dominant.ā€

It happens when I tune into myself first.

This technically cannot be proven—but I believe that horses fully pick up on our intentions.

When I go into a training session with the intention of ā€œgetting it done,ā€ that energy—that I used to not even be aware of—throws my horse into a tailspin. He’s worried about what will happen to him.

Boundaries accidentally get pushed and overlooked when the goal is ā€œgetting it doneā€.

When I started practising letting go of my plan—I instantly saw my horse relax. I’ve walked into a session simply with the intention of let’s see what happens…
and had incredible progress where previously it felt stuck

Here’s my 3 step process that’s gotten my horse the most relaxed I’ve ever seen him:

Step 1: Body Scan

Take a minute the next time you go to be with your horse.

Stand still, close your eyes, listen to your breath and your heartbeat.

Take notice and acknowledge how your body feels in this moment.

You don’t have to change anything.
Acknowledging and noticing how your body is in that moment is enough.

Step 2: Intentions

What had you planned to do with your horse?

Visualise the outcome you want.

Get specific.

Now— let go of your plan

Step 3: See what happens

Step into the session with the goal
ā€œlet’s just see what happensā€.

Repeat this as a mantra if you feel the pressure to reach your original goal.

Trust the process
Let go of expectations

Drop a šŸ¤ in the comments if you’re going to try this

Archie asked me for more bodywork—and this was the result.

I did a full session… but it felt like he was calling me back.

When I came over he asked for more bodywork in very specific areas and then stood by as his body began processing all that had happened.

Bodywork promotes a shift in the nervous system of the horse, from fight or flight into relaxation. Archie had sleepy head drops which are a sign of his nervous system switching over and the tension associated with being in fight or flight releasing. He was so relaxed he entered a deep rest which allows the body to process everything that has been reset.

I felt so honoured to be trusted by him, to watch over him as he internalised and reset his body.

Watch till the end to see his sleepy out of sync blinking šŸ‘€

It was never ā€œjust a phaseā€ā€¦.

Ever since I can remember, I have loved horses.
I didn’t grow up around them, or even live near any, I just always knew I needed one.

A horse was always at the top of every Christmas and birthday wishlist.
I took every chance to be with horses.

My cousins lived on a farm and had a few horses. Being the horse obsessed kid i was it was only natural I’d find a way to get on one.

Not long after this I started riding lessons and the idea that it was ā€œjust a phaseā€ started to diminish.

Now, over 17 years later, I’m working for myself, building my dream life with horses ✨

Behaviour modification - POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT

Please be aware the use of positive this context is not about ethics but mathematics.

šŸ„•Positive ReinforcementšŸŽ
Positive = to add
Reinforcement = to increase the likelihood of the behaviour happening again

Positive reinforcement works by adding something the horse wants after performing a desired behaviour. This increases the likelihood they will repeat the behaviour.

Food is often used as the reinforcement in this case, sometimes scratches are used too. The reinforcement needs to be desirable to the horse.

Positive reinforcement is often applied via clicker training. A click or sound marking the desired behaviour and acting as a bridge between desired behaviour being performed and food delivered. It enables very specific parts of behaviours to be reinforced rather than just feeding at the end of the behaviour or behaviour chain where it can be less clear about what was being reinforced.

Clicker training allows for behaviours to be broken down into small increments and rewarded at each stage before building back up and creating behaviour chains.

Positive reinforcement is a principle of behaviour modification. Clicker training is a method of applying the principle of positive reinforcement.

Welcome to Holistic Horse Wellbeing 🐓

I’m Ruby, founder and owner of Holistic Horse Wellbeing—a place built on six years of searching for how to support our horses wellbeing naturally, sustainably, and ethically. Having ridden and been around horses for over 17 years, I’m so excited to share my passion with horses and their humans.

We offer holistic, sustainable and ethical care, supporting the whole horse, not just symptoms.
We always following a horse-led approach, adapting our work to suit the individual. Our practices are evidence-based — No intimidation, no force, just clear communication.

What We Offer āœØā€Øā€¢ Equine Myofunctional Therapy (EMT): a whole‑horse approach to bodywork and massage, supporting every stage of life.

• Positive Reinforcement Coaching: clicker training for cooperative care, built on choice, communication and trust. We coach you to:
  – Create supportive learning environments
  – Understand how horses learn
  – Build new behaviours step‑by‑step
  – Redirect unwanted behaviours
  – Develop behaviour chains
  – Work with your horse—not against them.

We specialise in supporting horses with fear, anxiety, rescue backgrounds, trauma, or food-related aggression—empowering them and their humans.

I’m currently studying Equine Biological Nutrition through Animal Naturopathic Medicine Educatum—with herbal medicine and pasture management next, aiming to qualify as an Equine Naturopath 🌱
