๐Ÿ‘ OT Insight: Play-Based Therapy Ideas for Regulation

Children learn best through play โ€” and that includes learning how to regulate their emotions, energy, and attention ๐Ÿ’›. Play-based Occupational Therapy activities can give children fun, practical ways to calm, focus, and feel in control of their bodies.

๐ŸŒŸ Why regulation matters:
๐Ÿง  Helps children manage big feelings
๐ŸŽ“ Supports focus and learning at school
๐Ÿค Builds stronger relationships with peers and family
๐ŸŒˆ Promotes confidence and independence

๐Ÿ’ก Play ideas to support regulation:
๐Ÿช Movement games โ€“ jumping, swinging, or obstacle courses help release energy
๐ŸŽจ Creative play โ€“ painting, drawing, or playdough for calming focus
๐Ÿคน Heavy work play โ€“ pushing/pulling activities like wheelbarrow walks or tug-of-war
๐ŸŽถ Music and rhythm โ€“ clapping games, drumming, or dancing to support self-regulation
๐Ÿง˜ Mindful play โ€“ bubbles, yoga, or breathing games to slow down and reset

Every child is unique โ€” some need more movement to feel calm, others benefit from quiet and sensory-rich activities. ๐ŸŒผ

At The Daisy Clinic, our Occupational Therapists partner with families to turn play into powerful opportunities for growth, regulation, and development.

๐Ÿผ Why is Tummy Time So Important?

From the day your baby comes home, tummy time plays a big role in supporting healthy development.

๐ŸŒฑ Tummy time refers to placing your baby on their tummy while theyโ€™re awake and supervised. It helps build neck, shoulder, arm, and core strength, supports motor development, and helps prevent flat spots (plagiocephaly) on your babyโ€™s head.

๐Ÿ’ช Benefits of tummy time:

Builds strength for rolling, crawling, and sitting

Promotes head and neck control

Supports visual development by encouraging eye tracking

Helps prevent flat head syndrome

Encourages early motor exploration

โฑ How much is enough?

Start with just 2โ€“3 minutes, a few times a day

Gradually build up to at least 30 minutes daily by 3 months of age

Every little bit counts, even short bursts after nappy changes or before naps

๐Ÿงธ Make it fun!

Use mirrors, textured toys, or your own face as encouragement

Try tummy time on your chest or lap for extra bonding

Get down on the floor with your baby โ€” they love your company!

๐Ÿ™Œ If your baby dislikes tummy time, youโ€™re not alone. Start slowly, use support like a rolled towel under their chest, and speak to your paediatric physio if it remains a challenge.

๐ŸŒˆ Sunday Wellbeing: Yoga for Kids โ€“ Simple Poses

Did you know yoga can support your childโ€™s body and mind? ๐Ÿง˜โ€โ™‚๏ธโœจ From calm breathing to playful stretches, yoga helps children build strength, focus, and emotional regulation โ€” all while having fun!

๐ŸŒŸ Benefits of kidsโ€™ yoga:
๐Ÿ’ช Builds balance, coordination, and core strength
๐Ÿง  Improves focus and concentration
๐Ÿ’› Supports emotional regulation and relaxation
๐Ÿค Encourages connection between parent and child

๐Ÿ’ก Easy poses to try at home:

๐Ÿฉบ Child Health Update: When to Worry About Fevers

Fevers can feel worrying for parents, but theyโ€™re actually one of the bodyโ€™s natural ways of fighting infection ๐Ÿ’ช. Most fevers are mild and can be managed at home, but sometimes theyโ€™re a sign your child needs extra medical attention.

๐ŸŒŸ What counts as a fever?
๐ŸŒก A temperature of 38ยฐC or higher is considered a fever in children.

๐Ÿ’ก When to seek medical advice:
๐Ÿšผ Babies under 3 months with a fever (always check with a doctor)
๐Ÿฅฑ If your child is unusually drowsy, irritable, or difficult to wake
๐Ÿ’ง Signs of dehydration โ€“ dry mouth, no tears, fewer wet nappies
๐Ÿ˜ฎ Breathing difficulties, stiff neck, or persistent vomiting
๐Ÿ“ˆ A fever lasting more than 3 days

โœ… What parents can do at home:
๐Ÿ’ฆ Keep fluids up โ€“ small sips often
๐Ÿ‘• Dress your child in light clothing
๐Ÿ›Œ Offer rest and comfort
๐Ÿ“ Monitor temperature and symptoms

Remember: a fever is usually the symptom, not the illness itself. Trust your instincts โ€” if youโ€™re worried, itโ€™s always best to check in with your GP or healthcare provider ๐Ÿ’›.

At The Daisy Clinic, our multidisciplinary team supports families with practical, evidence-based health advice to help children thrive.

๐Ÿ—ฃ Speech Highlight: Speech Sounds and Articulation Stages

Did you know children develop speech sounds in a predictable order as they grow? ๐Ÿงฉ From those first adorable โ€œbabblesโ€ to clear sentences, each stage of speech development builds important foundations for confident communication.

๐ŸŒŸ Typical speech sound milestones:
๐Ÿ‘ถ 1โ€“2 years: Early sounds like p, b, m, d appear
๐Ÿ‘ง 2โ€“3 years: Sounds like k, g, f, t, n begin to develop
๐Ÿง’ 3โ€“4 years: Children refine s, y, v, sh and start clearer conversations
๐Ÿ‘ฆ 4โ€“5 years: Most speech sounds are emerging, though tricky ones like r, th, z may take longer
โœจ By around 7 years, most children have mastered their sounds

๐Ÿ’ก When to seek support:
๐Ÿ”น If your child is hard to understand compared to peers
๐Ÿ”น If frustration builds during communication
๐Ÿ”น If certain sounds havenโ€™t developed as expected

Clear speech helps children share ideas, connect with friends, and feel confident in their learning journey ๐Ÿ’›

At The Daisy Clinic, our Speech Pathologists use play-based, engaging strategies to support children in developing strong, clear, and confident communication skills.

๐Ÿง  Psychology Tip: Managing Sibling Rivalry

Siblings often share love, laughterโ€ฆ and sometimes a little rivalry too! ๐Ÿ’ฌ Arguments, competition, and jealousy are a normal part of growing up together, but when it feels overwhelming, a little guidance can make a big difference.

๐ŸŒŸ Why does sibling rivalry happen?
๐Ÿ”น Competing for attention from parents or caregivers
๐Ÿ”น Different personalities, needs, and interests
๐Ÿ”น Big life changes (new baby, moving house, school stress)
๐Ÿ”น Developing social and emotional skills

๐Ÿ’ก Strategies to ease sibling rivalry:
๐Ÿค Encourage teamwork โ€“ set up activities where siblings need to cooperate
๐Ÿ•’ Give each child one-on-one time โ€“ even a few minutes can help
๐Ÿ“ข Teach healthy communication โ€“ model calm voices and problem-solving
๐ŸŽฏ Celebrate differences โ€“ highlight each childโ€™s strengths and uniqueness
๐ŸŒฑ Support emotional regulation โ€“ naming feelings helps kids manage them

Sibling rivalry is not just conflict โ€” itโ€™s also a chance for children to learn empathy, negotiation, and resilience ๐Ÿ’›.

At The Daisy Clinic, our psychologists support children and teens to understand their emotions, build strong coping strategies, and foster healthier family relationships.

๐Ÿ‘ Why is my child so fidgety? An OTโ€™s Perspective

Do you notice your child always wiggling, tapping, or struggling to sit still? โœ‹ While it might seem like โ€œjust fidgeting,โ€ it can actually be their bodyโ€™s way of meeting important sensory or regulation needs.

๐ŸŒŸ Why might children fidget?
๐Ÿ”น To help their body stay alert and focused
๐Ÿ”น To manage big feelings and energy levels
๐Ÿ”น Because theyโ€™re seeking extra movement or pressure
๐Ÿ”น As a way to cope with challenges in attention or self-regulation

๐Ÿ’ก Practical strategies to support your child:
๐Ÿช‘ Offer movement breaks โ€“ jumping, stretching, or wall pushes
โœ๏ธ Use fidget tools โ€“ stress balls, putty, or chewable items
๐Ÿ“š Try alternative seating โ€“ wobble cushions or standing desks
๐Ÿค— Build in calming sensory input โ€“ deep pressure hugs or weighted items

Fidgeting isnโ€™t always a โ€œproblemโ€ to be fixed โ€” sometimes, itโ€™s your childโ€™s smart way of helping themselves manage and succeed ๐Ÿ’›

At The Daisy Clinic, our Occupational Therapists work with families to understand these behaviours and provide strategies that support your childโ€™s comfort, focus, and confidence.
