Ever wondered why your child can seem so bright in some areas… but struggle in others?

Giftedness isn’t just about being “smart” or doing well at school. It’s about how a child thinks, learns, and experiences the world.

Gifted children often:
✨ Learn quickly and ask deep, complex questions
✨ Show intense interests or passions
✨ Think creatively and outside the box
✨ Feel emotions very strongly

But here’s the part many people don’t realise…

Some gifted children also experience challenges with attention, behaviour, learning, or emotions. These children may be twice-exceptional (2e), meaning they are both gifted and have an additional difficulty such as ADHD, ASD, or a learning disorder.

Because of this, they are often misunderstood as:
❌ Lazy
❌ Not trying
❌ Behavioural
❌ “Average”

When in reality, they have a unique profile of strengths AND challenges.

The most accurate way to understand your child’s abilities is through a comprehensive assessment, including an IQ test, which helps identify both their strengths and areas where they may need support.

💡 When children are truly understood, everything changes, their confidence, their engagement, and their ability to thrive.

👶 Noticed a flat spot on your baby’s head? You’re not alone!

Plagiocephaly (also known as flat head syndrome) is very common in babies, and the good news is, early support can make a big difference.

Simple strategies like:
✔️ Increasing tummy time
✔️ Encouraging head turning to both sides
✔️ Position changes during play and feeding

…can all help support your baby’s development and head shape.

🚩 If your baby prefers looking one way, has limited neck movement, or the flat spot isn’t improving, it’s worth getting it checked.

🚨 Big news for families needing speech support!

From 1 March 2026, Medicare has expanded access to speech pathology services for children and young people under 25.

This change means eligible individuals with:
• Stuttering
• Speech sound disorders (including articulation or phonological disorders, childhood apraxia of speech, and dysarthria)
• Cleft lip and/or palate

may now be able to access Medicare-rebated speech pathology services with a valid referral from a GP, specialist, or consultant physician. ()

Through the updated Medicare pathway, eligible clients may receive:
✔️ Up to 8 assessment sessions
✔️ Up to 20 treatment sessions

These rebates can help reduce the cost of therapy and improve access to early support for many children and young people. ()

💬 Early communication support can make a huge difference to a child’s confidence, learning, and social development.

If you think your child may benefit from speech pathology support, speak with your GP about a referral or reach out to our team for guidance.

🚭 Concerned about va**ng, alcohol, or drug use in a young person? You're not alone.

Substance use is becoming increasingly common among children and teenagers, particularly with the rise of va**ng and easy access to alcohol and other drugs. For many young people, experimentation can quickly develop into patterns that affect their mental health, behaviour, relationships, and school engagement.

At The Daisy Clinic, we provide supportive and evidence-based counselling for young people experiencing challenges with:

• Va**ng and ni****ne dependence
• Alcohol use
• Drug use and experimentation
• Addictive behaviours
• Emotional regulation and peer pressure
• Anxiety, low mood, or stress linked to substance use

Our clinicians work with young people and families to understand the underlying reasons behind substance use, while building practical strategies to support healthier coping, decision-making, and emotional wellbeing.

Early support can make a significant difference.

Depression in Young Children and Adolescents: Understanding the Signs

The journey to adolescence can be a time of significant emotional and social change. While it is normal for teenagers to experience ups and downs, persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness or withdrawal may be signs of depression.

Depression in adolescents can sometimes look different from depression in adults. Instead of appearing sad, young people may become irritable, withdrawn or disengaged from activities they once enjoyed.

Some common signs of depression in adolescents can include:

• Ongoing sadness or low mood
• Irritability or frequent anger
• Loss of interest in activities they previously enjoyed
• Changes in sleep or appetite
• Difficulty concentrating at school
• Withdrawing from friends and family
• Feelings of worthlessness or hopelessness
• Talking about feeling overwhelmed or wanting to give up

Depression can affect a young person’s relationships, school engagement and overall wellbeing, but support can make a meaningful difference.

Psychologists can help adolescents by providing a safe and supportive space to talk about their experiences. Therapy may focus on helping young people understand their emotions, develop coping strategies, strengthen resilience and reconnect with the things that give their life meaning.

If you are concerned about your teenager’s mental health, seeking support early can help them feel understood and supported.
