It's with great sadness we announce Alison Kandelas passed away yesterday.

Since 2008, Alison was well known at Health Dimensions as a naturopath, herbalist and remedial massage therapist, and for her home clinic, The Quirky Herbalist.

Alison will be remembered for her sunny nature, her interest in natural health and for always being barefoot in the clinic ... all year round. She loved gardening, both for plants for beauty, particularly sunflowers and roses, and for plants for their practical qualities and usage in her herbal remedies.

There were many older or sick dogs Alison adopted which she treated with herbal remedies to ease their pain, along with her devoted care and understanding their needs. There was no dog Alison loved more though than Mickey who often accompanied her in the clinic, and if its possible, she'll be happy in eternity with Mickey by her side again.

In Alison's words, at the end of an appointment, or leaving for home after clinic, 'Have a Happy Day.'

Alison, you'll be missed.

This beautiful climbing shrub, Allamanda Blanchetti receives a lot of attention when we have a bunch in a vase on the reception desk. It grows in the clinic's backyard in a sunny position and loves organic soil in a good-draining position.

If you want to find the secrets of the Universe, think in terms of energy, frequency and vibration. (Nikola Tesla)

Everything in life is vibration. (Albert Einstein)

We are surrounded by frequency and our health is influenced by this flow of energy in ways you may have never condsidered.

Our frequency healing therapist is qualified and experienced in Frequency Specific Microcurrent (FSM) and Elecrodermal Screening (EDS). You might be surprised by what your body reveals as the cause of your pain issues.

‘The body is a self-healing mechanism – you trace a condition back to when it started and correct it, be it emotional, physical or chemical and healing occurs.’

During winter, we can experience stiff joints, pain in the back and neck, and constriction in our lungs with the changes in temperature. Our discomfort increases when we hunch our shoulders because we're cold. Unfortunately some people experience more discomfort than others and anyone with osteoarthritis may find their symptoms increase.

There are several ways you can help yourself during the cooler months:

1. An osteopathic treatment can improve circulation, reducing inflammation and improve your flexibility.
2. Acupuncture eases the affects of osteoarthritis, and joint stiffness if your aches increase.
3. Improve your immunity by eating fresh seasonal fruit and vegetables, or frozen if they match the winter growing period. Buy the best you can afford. When eaten seasonally, fruit and vegetables are at the peak of their nutritional value and flavour.
4. Its important to remember if you get a cold or the flu, your body is telling you to slow down, lie down, eat good food, get into the sunshine and rest to give yourself the best conditions to heal.
5. Treat your cold or flu naturally. Following are a couple of links for natural remedies:

Osteopaths can help you with your pain issues and injury prevention whether you're a young adult, over 70, or somewhere in between. If you're juggling tertiary education, a job, a social life, sport and exercises, and life pressures or you're time poor and making your health a low priority osteopathy can return your body to its best possible state of health and function.

As osteopaths know how the human body is meant to work, they can help release tension, pain and increase general mobility. An osteopaths range of techniques means they develop action plans for your treatment of long term health conditions, a physical disability, mobility and pain management.

Wearing rosemary has become a traditional symbol of remembrance and commemoration in Australia.

On Anzac Day, and sometimes on Remembrance Day and other special days of commemoration, we wear a small sprig of rosemary.

Rosemary is an ancient symbol of fidelity and remembrance. More than 50,000 Australians served in the Gallipoli Campaign, and more than 8,700 of them lost their lives. After Gallipoli, many of the original Anzacs served in Europe on the Western Front, and some served again in World War II.

During World War I, a hospital in Daw Park, South Australia, was operating as Keswick Military Hospital. In the 1980s, a gardener at the hospital recalled the history of the rosemary on the grounds. The gardener told David Lawry OAM that a wounded soldier repatriated to South Australia in 1915 brought with him a cutting of rosemary from Gallipoli. The sprig was planted and later propagated.

During World War I, red poppies were among the first plants to grow on the Western Front in Europe. They bloomed across the wasted battlefields of northern France and Belgium.

The poppy has long been a part of commemorations held on the anniversary of the Armistice of 11 November 1918, which we now call Remembrance Day.

Today, the red poppy has become a very special symbol of commemoration on Remembrance Day in Australia and other Commonwealth countries, and on Anzac Day in Australia and New Zealand.

Easter eggs as gifts is believed to stem from the symbolism of new life and rebirth during this reverent time. The tradition began when eggs were hard-boiled, decorated and saved during Lent, a time when eating eggs was discouraged, making them a special treat on Easter Sunday.

Acupuncture
Over the last 50 years, acupuncture has undergone intensive scientific evaluation in over 8000 clinical trials. As a treatment for various pain issues, it has demonstrated its effectiveness in many modern Western diseases. These trials indicate acupuncture is amongst the safest interventions in modern medicine.

There's evidence of positive effect for the following conditions:
Allergic rhinitis
Chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (with anti-emetics)
Chronic low back pain
Headache (tension type and chronic)
Knee osteoarthritis
Migraine prevention
Postoperative nausea and vomiting
Postoperative pain

There's also evidence of potential positive effect across many pain and health issues. Our acupuncturist is qualified and experienced to help you find a solution from acute or chronic skeletal pain, to respiratory concerns, or reproductive, emotional or digestive issues.

Traditional Chinese Herbal Medicine
Chinese medicine has been traditionally used in the treatment of multiple health issues with the use of herbal medicine, among other techniques. It has been developed over thousands of years and its use has increased in Australia in recent times.
