“Safe Havens” provided by NSW Health, or similar services provided by community managed organisations (CMOs) are an invaluable option for people experiencing mental health distress and suicidal thoughts. Compared to a busy hospital emergency department they can offer a more calming, respectful and empathetic place for people in crisis to go for help.

Because these support services are provided by both NSW Health and CMO’s it can be hard to find your nearest service, BEING - Mental Health Consumers Ltd has created a single interactive map that brings them all together in place to make it easier for people to find a venue if they need one.

Thank you so much for the shout out and for regularly attending and contributing with your ideas and insights at the meetings this year.

It was wonderful to join the Hills Mental Health Interagency (HMHI) for their final meeting for 2023.

The HMHI began in 2012 with the aim of bringing together service providers as well as community groups for networking, information sharing and raising awareness of mental health issues and where to get help if needed in the general community.

This network was established when mental health was not talked about and resulted in not only starting important conversations but the establishment of charity groups in the Hills focused on mental health including the Positive Vibes Foundation and the Mind Connections Foundation.

The HMHI is currently led by Kylie Smith of Stride’s Safe Space and Tania Gutierrez of Mental Health Training Essentials. Both are passionate about mental health and improving outcomes for those experiencing mental health difficulties as well as connecting community. Thank you Kylie and Tania for the difference you are making in our community through your own jobs and through the HMHI👏

The HMHI has some exciting plans for 2024 and I can’t wait to see the network expand and what they collaboratively achieve in the next 12 months.

If you are interested in being part of the HMHI in 2024 or to keep up with the HMHI’s latest news and events make sure you follow them on LinkedIn using the following link

If you are self-employed, you may relate to this article by Mental Health First Aid Australia.

In my experience, one of the benefits for self-employed people who learn STANDARD MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID® (MHFA™) is not just that they can learn to help others. Learning to recognise signs and symptoms of mental health problems and crises in ourselves and knowing about appropriate early interventions can help us mitigate the negative impact on our businesses, relationships and work/life balance.

If you are a small business owner in the Parramatta or The Hills area of NSW, or in a surrounding area, I would love to see you at the next public STANDARD MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID® (MHFA™) course that I will be delivering (17th and 24th of March 2023).
