How many Handpieces do we really need for our practice?
Are you facing challenges with your dental handpiece inventory?

Many practices tell us, “We’ve got heaps of spares.”
But here’s the reality: if your spare handpieces aren’t working, they’re not spares — they’re just clutter.

When a handpiece fails mid-treatment, the expectation is simple: reach for a spare and keep going. But if that backup isn’t in good condition, suddenly you’re short two handpieces — the broken one and the unusable “spare.” That’s double the downtime, double the pressure on your team, and more delays for your patients.

Why Proper Handpiece Inventory Matters
Having sufficient handpieces is crucial for smooth patient flow and staff productivity.
We recommend that each treatment chair is equipped with a minimum of 8-10 high speed and 4 low speed handpieces. This setup not only ensures that your team can provide timely care but also allows for essential cooling periods between uses - protecting the longevity of your equipment.

Reduce Stress and Enhance Performance
By allowing handpieces to cool properly, you minimize the risk of premature wear and tear, which can lead to costly repairs and replacements. Additionally, with an adequate inventory, you’ll significantly reduce the number of sterilization cycles required, relieving pressure on your staff and improving patient satisfaction.

Mitigate Downtime Risks
Unexpected repairs can disrupt your practice, leading to lost income and rescheduled appointments. With our extensive experience - over 40+ combined years in dental industry - we understand the impact a malfunctioning handpiece can have. That’s why we offer refurbished replacement options for major brands, allowing you to expand your inventory without the financial burden of purchasing new equipment.

As a busy dental practice, it’s easy to dismiss minor issues with your handpieces. However, what seems like a small problem now can quickly escalate into major, costly repairs if left unchecked.

At Dental Drill Solutions, we specialize in keeping your dental handpieces in peak condition, helping you avoid downtime and unexpected repair costs.

Here’s what we recommend:

✅ Do a quick stocktake — are your spares autoclaved and spinning smoothly?
✅ Send in any underperforming or idle units before the busy period hits.
✅ Let us help assess, repair, and return them to full working order — fast.

DDS is a trusted Australian family-run repair service that helps practices just like yours stay prepared and reduce handpiece-related disruptions.

Did you know that improper care of your low-speed handpieces could lead to costly repairs—or worse, make them uneconomical to fix?

Here’s a quick insight into what happens inside your handpiece when excess moisture is left behind after cleaning and autoclaving:

~ Corrosion: Internal parts start to rust, damaging critical components.
~ Ceased Movement: Rusted moving parts eventually stop working, rendering the handpiece unusable.
~ Increased Costs: When the damage becomes extensive, replacing the entire handpiece may be the only option.

Much like a car requires regular oil changes, periodic battery use, and scheduled servicing, your handpieces also need consistent care to stay in top condition.

Tips to Keep Your Handpieces Running Smoothly:

1. Always ensure handpieces are completely dry after cleaning and autoclaving.
2. Regularly lubricate your handpieces, especially if they’ve been sitting unused for weeks or months.
3. Remember, handpieces only remain sterile for only four weeks after autoclaving. Regular lubrication and use is equally important and increases their longevity.

At Dental Drill Solutions, we’re not just here to repair your handpieces—we’re here to help you prevent these issues in the first place. If you’d like to ensure your equipment is ready for the new year, our team can inspect, service, and provide personalized maintenance advice for your handpieces.

Call us today on 1300 337 300 to book your next handpiece service or to discuss how we can help.

We look forward to supporting your practice and keeping your tools in perfect working order!

Have you noticed your high-speed handpiece performing differently lately?

A high-pitched noise, low torque, or rough spinning are clear warning signs of internal issues—and if left unchecked, these can lead to complete failure.

Common Causes of Handpiece Deterioration:
Skipping Critical Maintenance Steps: During busy times, small maintenance steps can be overlooked. This might save time but accelerates wear and tear on your handpieces.

Using Handpieces Straight Out of the Autoclave: Internal components remain warm and malleable after sterilization. Running the handpiece too soon can lead to quicker wear and tear.

Improper Cooling Techniques: Metals expand and contract with heat, and running a warm handpiece under water to cool it down can crack the impeller, causing severe internal damage.

How to Prevent Damage:
Allow your handpieces to cool completely before use.
Schedule regular maintenance to catch and address early signs of wear.
Pay attention to performance—small changes can indicate bigger problems brewing.

At Dental Drill Solutions, we specialize in diagnosing and preventing handpiece issues before they become costly repairs. Our expert technicians ensure your equipment stays reliable and efficient, giving you peace of mind in your practice.

Call us on 1300 337 300 to schedule a check-up or service for your handpieces. We’ll help keep them performing at their best so you can focus on your patients.

Lack of Handpiece Lubrication is approx. 70% the Cause of High Speed Handpiece Issues we see.

We see so many handpieces come to us for repair that either just need sufficient lubrication or that the lack of lubrication has led to the premature metal-on-metal wear of parts inside.

Bearings manufacturers suggest that bearings should have a lifespan of up to 600 autoclave cycles if regularly maintained (i.e. lubricated before and after autoclaving).

If your handpieces are failing prematurely you need to check the following:

* Staff handling/maintenance procedures, are they all following the same directions and not cutting corners, and also being careful with the handpieces, dropping them on the floor can easily break bearings and optic glass rods, dent the heads so that the turbines can no longer turn inside.
* How do you lubricate your handpiece manually/with an oiling machine? (if you have a machine, is that working properly - when was it last serviced?)
* Ensure there are enough handpieces in circulation to allow for sufficient cooling between autoclave cycles. Never run them under cold water to try to cool the handpieces quicker.
* We recommend that (for a standard 9am-5pm surgery) every chair should have 8-10 high speed handpieces and 4-5 low speed handpieces. This allows time between use to prepare for the next patient, economical use of the autoclave and also allows for if one or two handpieces are out for repair or servicing.
*Annual servicing of handpieces is beneficial - have you got an annual care plan in place? Annual servicing has been found to lead to an increased timeframe between repairs and parts replacement. It not only allows us to lubricate the handpieces, thoroughly and check for future wear, but we clean them inside to remove dirt, gunk and debris that may have accumulated internally during use that cannot be easily wiped away by staff.

Not enough lubrication is bad, but too much oil is equally bad - you need to find the happy medium for optimum performance.

Too much oil inside the handpiece that has not been purged (run on a chair to distribute & expel the excess) is not good. When the handpiece then goes through the autoclave cycle up to 135 ̊c it actually bakes the oil, solidifying it, which makes the inside all gunky and will ultimately cause problems.

If you feel that your handpiece is not functioning properly, follow this checklist first to troubleshoot:

* Always start off by checking if there's any air supply coming from your chair > passing through the coupler. You should hear the air and feel it blow on your hand.

* Then check to see if the handpiece works on a different chair & coupler.
If it does work elsewhere then there may be an issue with your chair or coupler in that room, so try another handpiece on your chair it to see if it presents with the same issue.

* Try to spin the bur with your fingers manually in case some debris has got stuck in the bearings.

*Even though you may think your regular lubrication process is enough, the autoclave process dries the handpiece internally each time. Therefore a quick sq**rt of lubrication and running the handpiece on the chair to distribute the lubrication oil may be just what it needs to get it going.

* We recommend the NSK PanaPlus Spray can which consists of both lubrication and cleaning agents, applied to the handpiece with the correct spray nozzle adaptor.

Follow the tech video link below to make sure you are using the correct lubrication nozzle for the brand(s) of handpiece you use, and to ensure you are spraying and purging correctly.
