You may notice that toward the end of pregnancy, you notice increased tightenings or Braxton Hicks in the evening.

This is predominantly due to the release of melatonin in response to darkness.

In the context of birth, melatonin increases the uterus sensitivity to oxytocin (our labour hormone).

With darkness often comes relaxation and a sense of calm.

If your body feels safe enough to go to sleep, it is safe for your baby to be born.

See you at 2am 😉

When we prepare for labour, we need to surround ourselves with positive stories and evidenced based information.

Taking on someone else's story can just create fear.

At nurture midwifery care, we aim to reduce your fear and increase your understanding of birth and the postnatal period. We build your knowledge to approach your birth with confidence.

Let us nurture you.

Positions for labour and birth will vary from woman to woman. A side lying position may be a fantastic option to allow some rest and get you off your feet.

The use of a peanut ball can be used to:

1. Ease pelvic pressure.
2. Promote optimal baby positioning (particularly valuable for women with epidurals)
3. Facilitate labour progress by changing the angle of your pelvis and creating more space.

Be sure to ask your midwife to grab one out for you and give it a try.

Learn more about positions for birth and much, much more in our Nurture Midwifery care appts.

We'd love to Nurture you.

Again, thanks to for sharing this amazing photo.

💓BIRTH SUPPORT💓

Support during labour is not about just "being there" or "holding her hand"

🌱 It's about providing space for her to do what she needs without judgement.

🌱 It's about trusting the process and advocating for her when needed.

🌱 It's about "knowing" what she wants and helping her to navigate these wishes.

🌱 It's about touch and presence.

🌱 It's about connection and love.

🌱 It's about oxytocin (you are her oxytocin booster 💓).

🌱 It is about providing her a Safe, Calm and Private environment.

At Nurture Midwifery care, as part of our antenatal care, we provide education and encouragement to the support team to build their confidence and knowledge.

I was shocked to be woken at 0400 with my waters breaking. My feelings at that time were a sense of nervousness and excitement. We were finally going to meet our baby. ❤️

Within 1 hour, I was contracting every 2 mins. We managed the contractions at home using my Tens machine and with the incredible support of my husband and Mum. After a few hours, we decided to head into the hospital.

We arrived at Maternity, and I was 5cm dilated. I made a decision for an epidural, and very soon after, they discovered I was fully dilated.

Our beautiful baby was born with the help of the vacuum cup and placed immediately onto my chest, where she stayed for many hours. Meeting our gorgeous little Dottie was so exciting.

I have never been so proud of myself and am so in love with our beautiful girl.

This was the most amazing experience and one I will never forget.

what an amazing photo

🌿Braxton Hicks contractions, also known as "practice" or "false" contractions, are irregular and mild tightenings in the abdomen that can occur during pregnancy.

🌿They are the body's way to prepare for labour and are normal to experience. While some women don't feel them at all, others experience many.

🌿Braxton Hicks contractions can start around six weeks into pregnancy, but are usually felt in the second or third trimester.

🌿We will go through all of these things in our clinic appts with you. Give us a call if you want some continuity for your pregnancy with lots of education along the way.

🌿Did you experience Braxton Hicks?

🌿What did they feel like for you?

April is designated as International Caesarean Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness and educate about caesarean births, focusing on reducing preventable C-sections, supporting recovery, and advocating for vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC).

It is also about supporting our mums who have had an unplanned caesarean and the feelings attached to that birth.

While our ambition should be to reduce the unnecessary caesarean section rate, we also want to reassure our families that work is being done to improve the experience of a caesarean section and allow families to be a big part of their journey.

Our aim is to help them create their own unique experience of meeting their baby by simple birth preferences like:

🌿 Delayed clamping of the cord
🌿 Music
🌿 Immediate skin to skin with your baby in theatre
🌿Taking photos

How beautiful are these photos? ❤️❤️❤️❤️

If you are planning your next birth and want to explore your options in a relaxed unrushed environment, reach out to us .midwiferycare

Did you know that babies can change the shape of their head to navigate their way out? How clever is that!

Their head can look a little out of shape when they are born, but it quickly resolves over the next few hours/days.

This is one of the reasons that movement of a mother in labour can be so helpful.

This little one took a little extra effort to start to appear and then finally moved into place.

Look at Dad bringing his hands over to recieve his baby 🙏❤️

This is the coolest thing and is so wonderful when we can facilitate this. That immediate connection.
That feeling of being involved in this pivitol moment in time. ❤️
