STAGES OR GRADES OF SWELLING
Once an area of the body develops lymphoedema the swelling will not go away. It can only be managed and preventing it from getting worse is the aim.

Without treatment and self-care this swelling will get worse and impacts on day to day living.

Grade 1 – early stages of development
• Swelling reduces on elevation of the limb or area
• No fibrosis
• Skin is normal
• Swelling “pits” – push your thumb or finger into the swollen area it leaves a temporary divot that slowly builds back up
• Muscle or even adipose tissue should spring back almost instantly

Grade 2 – the result of untreated Grade 1 oedema
• The swelling no longer goes down overnight or on elevation
• No longer pits
• Some degree of fibrosis in the swollen area

If left untreated it can progress to Grade 4 “Elephantiasis”. The limb continues to swell and new scar tissue forms to eventually produce a limb that looks like that of an elephant – cylindrical, with no shapeliness of a regular leg.

If you are in need of help to manage your lymphoedema and prevent it from getting worse then book in for your Manual Lymphatic Drainage with Raine.
